“Double burger, Jesus shake, two fries, oh yeah, to go please. Thanks. Sorry, what’s that you say? I’ve got my earpiece in. Was listening to my call. No, didn’t see that on the menu. Was reading a text, too busy. No, I said a Jesus shake. For heaven’s sake, five bucks? Man, prices have gone up.” Fast food Jesus anyone?
All joking aside, we’re living in a fast food world – with a fast food Jesus. Think I’m kidding about fast food Jesus? Think again. Seriously. Okay, it’s not true for all of us. But let’s see if any of us can relate to this.
We pick and choose when we want Him – if we want Him. We toss Him out like a cheap hamburger if He doesn’t taste good. We think He costs too much when we realize our lives need to change to follow Him. We pick something else on the menu when we see a better option. We share Him with our friends when we feel like it – or not. We go back to Him when we realize the other fast food restaurants aren’t offering anything better. We spit Him out when we decide He’s not good enough. Or maybe we douse Him in condiments to make Him more palatable. Or complain to the manager when He’s not living up to our expectations. After all, we should get what we want, right?
Convicting? I don’t know about you, but I’ve got to get honest. Don’t we all? We’re living in a fast food world with a fast food Jesus. Everything is fast. Quick. Speedy. Immediate. Now or else. Or else? Yeah. Think about all the fast food restaurants. Plenty of choices. Don’t like this one? Try that one. Stick with it, eh? Nah. Just got coupons for the one down the street. Don’t have time to wait? That one has better service. Service? Yeah, isn’t that the point?
The point? Well, isn’t Jesus here to serve us while we go about OUR lives OUR way for OURSELVES – and maybe, just maybe, for others? But for God? Living for God? Isn’t God up in the sky to pour down blessings 24-7? To answer prayers NOW? To wait on us? Didn’t Jesus die on the cross and rise again so we could believe in Him and live happily ever after? Happy Meal, Happy Meal. A pretty happy deal, eh? Jesus Meal anyone?! For just $2.99, but oh, prices are up. Yikes! Get real.
Think about it. I know. I’m asking you to think about some pretty serious stuff. And you’re shaking you’re head. Wondering. How could this possibly be me? Or you? Well, get honest. Which fast food restaurant has better service? Jesus? What does Jesus have to do with it? Jesus? Jesus who? Fast food, DRIVE-THROUGH Jesus, that’s who.
So what about those of us who take the time to SIT DOWN AND EAT inside – yes, inside – our fast food restaurants in our fast food lives? How different is it really? We still pick and choose off the menu, we still pay fast food prices, we still pick through our food – just like we sometimes pick through our Bibles. Someone once told me the Bible isn’t a smorgasbord; it’s not a buffet. But how often do we take what we want of Jesus and leave the rest for the waitress – or the trash.
Really? Really. Let’s be honest. I know. I keep saying this. Time to get honest. Because I believe if we all get honest, no matter how committed and dedicated (or not) we are in our lives to our relationship with the Lord (if we have one), we need to think about this. Are we treating Jesus like a fast food burger in our fast food lives, to be picked up when we’re hungry – only to toss the wrapper in the trash before we rush off to the rest of our lives?
Or, is Jesus number one?
Fast food and drive through’s aside.
Let’s get honest.
Exo 20:2 I am the LORD thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.
Exo 20:3 Thou shalt have no other gods before me.
