God is NOT an Angry God – Is He?

0
I think my mouth must have dropped all the way down to the sand as I stood on the beach listening to a woman tell me that a pastor had taught her that God is all about grace and that the word “wrath” is misunderstood. After all, she explained as she had learned, God is not a wrathful God; He doesn’t get angry. Besides, she told me, we’re under the New Covenant now. Let me give you a word of warning.

If you believe for a single second that God is not wrathful, that He will  not take vengeance on those who sin against Him and do not repent and place their faith in Christ and become followers of Him ever working out their salvation with “fear and trembling”, and that eternity in hell does not await those who do not receive God’s mercy through Christ’s death on the cross to pay the penalty for our sins and resurrection, you are believing the biggest lie in the universe. God did not leave His wrath behind in the Old Testament. And if you study the Old Testament carefully, you will see His mercy abundantly clearly in the Old Testament – as He offers it again and again to those who repent and return to Him.

The New Testament of the Bible, and the New Covenant made available through Christ shedding His blood on the cross as the perfect act of atonement for the sins of the world to be received by those who repent and become committed followers of Him, are NOT without the wrath of God. The New Testament, if you study it carefully, makes it abundantly clear that “the wages of sin is death”, that eternity in hell awaits those who do not turn from their wicked ways and become believers in and followers of Christ, and that God’s judgment awaits. His wrath will be made known like never before for all those who do not call upon the name of the Lord and leave their wickedness behind. Wrath? We cannot even conceive of the degree of wrath God has for those who do not receive His merciful redemption plan, His salvation, His forgiveness, His freedom through Christ. And if we should ever be so foolish as to believe that His anger will only come at the day of judgment, let us not forget that we reap what we sow. Many of us, if we are honest with ourselves, realize that day by day we find in our lives the negative consequences of poor choices, bad decisions, the refusal to obey God when we know exactly what it is that He desires for us to do.

I can think of nobody in the universe that desires us to believe the lie that God does not have wrath and anger than Satan himself. Why? Because he wants us to continue in our sin, he wants us to believe we can get away with our wickedness, he wants us to think that we will get away with our sins now and forever, and he wants nothing more than to keep us from dropping down to our hands, our knees, and our faces with the wailing and remorse that only a truly repentant person can know. Satan wants to prevent us from loving and worshiping our God. If he can convince us that God is never angry, that God simply sits on His throne in heaven doling out His mercy whether or not we ever repent and turn to Him, whether or not we ever truly give our lives to Him to whom our lives truly belong, then Satan has won, hasn’t he? Oh, what a lie it is to declare, and to believe, that God is not a God of wrath!

And yet, God is a loving God, a merciful God, a tender God, a holy God. He is a righteous God! He is perfect! He is true! He is sweet and gentle and kind, but He is also angry when He chooses to be. Doesn’t He have the right? Who are we to decide God should never be angry. We need only look in the mirror for a moment to rest assured God has every right to be angry for the sins of humanity. He is righteous; He is fair! He is loving, but yes, He gets angry! Doesn’t any father do the same? And He is the perfect Father, is He not? He is!

Please do not be deceived. Please do not ever fall into believing anyone who speaks of God’s grace in such a way that they might convince you that the New Covenant means all you have to do is believe in Jesus and live happily ever after. Rest assured Jesus Himself right in God’s Word tells a bunch of people they CANNOT enter into the Kingdom of God NOT because they don’t believe in Him, but because of their wicked ways (Matthew 7:23). We must repent! We must repent! We must repent! We must turn from our wickedness and seek the mercy of the Living God! And should we fall once more, we must go running back to the mercy seat, seek and receive God’s mercy, and learn by study of God’s Word and the power of His Holy Spirit how to walk the way He has called us. To walk in His ways. To walk with Him. To walk with our loving Father in heaven who has a wrath reserved for those of us who will not come to Him and give Him our hearts and our lives.

Repent, my friends, repent! Repent while there is yet time! For who knows what tomorrow might bring? Who knows if even this very evening, it might be too late? While we still have breath in our bodies, let us know most assuredly that we will not receive God’s wrath but instead receive His mercy! Repent and return to the Lord! Receive His love and mercy, and thank Him, thank Him, that Jesus died on the cross so that you might be saved and be spared the wrath of God!

For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 6:23 NASB

18For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men who suppress the truth in unrighteousness19because that which is known about God is evident within them; for God made it evident to them. 20For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse. 21For even though they knew God, they did not honor Him as God or give thanks, but they became futile in their speculations, and their foolish heart was darkened. 22Professing to be wise, they became fools, 23and exchanged the glory of the incorruptible God for an image in the form of corruptible man and of birds and four-footed animals and crawling creatures. Romans 1:18-23 underlining added

But because of your stubbornness and unrepentant heart you are storing up wrath for yourself in the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God6who WILL RENDER TO EACH PERSON ACCORDING TO HIS DEEDS7to those who by perseverance in doing good seek for glory and honor and immortality, eternal life; 8but to those who are selfishly ambitious and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, wrath and indignation.  Romans 2:5-8 NASB underlining added

herefore consider the members of your earthly body as dead to immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and greed, which amounts to idolatry. 6For it is because of these things that the wrath of God will come upon the sons of disobedience7and in them you also once walked, when you were living in them. 8But now you also, put them all aside: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and abusive speech from your mouth. 9Do not lie to one another, since you laid aside the old self with its evil practices, 10and have put on the new self who is being renewed to a true knowledge according to the image of the One who created him— 11a renewal in which there is no distinction between Greek and Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave and freeman, but Christ is all, and in all. Colossians 3:5-11 NASB underlining added

that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; 10for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation. Romans 10:9-10 NASB
