GOD is SMALLER

Wow. Talk about convicted. I was just reading in a book the testimony of a woman who heard God ask her the question as she was in the midst of a fiery trial if she thought God was BIGGER than her circumstances. I couldn’t even finish reading the testimony before I was struck – by the Holy Spirit nonetheless – with the strong, undeniable conviction that I have been in the midst of my own fiery trial with a simple – and horribly wrong – lie buried deep in my soul. GOD is SMALLER. Well, of course He’s not. But He used the woman’s testimony – and the question He asked her – to make me take a good look at my own heart. Oh sure, I love the Lord with all my heart. Everyone who knows me knows that. But that doesn’t always mean that I’m walking by faith. And it certainly doesn’t mean that I am not falling for Satan’s lies. Like this big fat lie. GOD is SMALLER. Wow, eh?

It’s funny – and interesting, and challenging, of course – how God works. I have been forcing myself to finish the book I am reading because I purchased it (I try not to buy myself a lot of books because of my budget) and figured I better at least read it. But in all honesty, the book just hasn’t done much for me. So go figure. Tonight, I force myself to trudge through more of the book, assuming it will continue to do nothing for me. Then along comes the Holy Spirit, bringing to light something I absolutely could not see for the life of me. And how destructive, and dangerous, and potentially deadly, it is to believe that anything in the entire world is bigger than God is. But the truth of the matter is that I have felt so immersed in the absolute yuck of this trial that I have had great difficulty seeing even one centimeter past it, over it, around it, and through it. I’ve just tried to put one foot in front of another, and not done such a great job of that, mind you.

Talk about a change of perspective, thanks to the Holy Spirit using this random author and random book that I’m slowly wading through to remind me of THE TRUTH. God is ALWAYS – and I mean ALWAYS – bigger. This reminds me of the story in the Old Testament of Caleb and Joshua go to check out the land and see God’s blessings and victory when the men who went with them could only see the giants (Numbers 13). Who exactly is bigger? The circumstances? The giants? Or GOD?

GOD IS BIGGER – ALWAYS. Sometimes I get my eyes and heart so stuck on my circumstances, and my emotions so caught up in the challenge of the circumstances, that I get my perspective totally out of whack. Then along comes the Lord to remind me of the TRUTH.

GOD IS BIGGER – ALWAYS. ABSOLUTELY ALWAYS.

25At the end of forty days they returned from spying out the land. 26And they came to Moses and Aaron and to all the congregation of the people of Israel in the wilderness of Paran, at Kadesh. They brought back word to them and to all the congregation, and showed them the fruit of the land. 27And they told him, “We came to the land to which you sent us. It flows with milk and honey, and this is its fruit. 28However, the people who dwell in the land are strong, and the cities are fortified and very large. And besides, we saw the descendants of Anak there. 29The Amalekites dwell in the land of the Negeb. The Hittites, the Jebusites, and the Amorites dwell in the hill country. And the Canaanites dwell by the sea, and along the Jordan.”
30But Caleb quieted the people before Moses and said, “Let us go up at once and occupy it, for we are well able to overcome it.” 31Then the men who had gone up with him said, “We are not able to go up against the people, for they are stronger than we are.” 32So they brought to the people of Israel a bad report of the land that they had spied out, saying, “The land, through which we have gone to spy it out, is a land that devours its inhabitants, and all the people that we saw in it are of great height. 33And there we saw the Nephilim (the sons of Anak, who come from the Nephilim), and we seemed to ourselves like grasshoppers, and so we seemed to them.”” NUMBERS 13 ESV bold and underlining added for effect
