“[Such and such] was a stepping stone to get to where you are now,” the Holy Spirit who dwells within His followers told me. “Everything [I tell you to do even when it’s simply a stepping stone] is important because I tell you to do it,” He elaborated. “No matter how long or short the season. Some things I tell you to do are simply stepping stones I use because I am taking you from one place to the next…”
He wasn’t finished. He said more, then this.
“Don’t discount the significance of anything I tell you to do,” He finished. “Do everything in love with boldness and courage. And be humble not proud. I despise pride. Humble yourself and obey even with stepping stones. I don’t tell you always in advance what is a stepping stone, and in the grand scheme of things it doesn’t make a difference. What matters is your willingness to submit to me and follow me wherever I take you to do whatever I tell you to do regardless of the length of time and that you do so with a heart to please me.”
Friend, if you’re anything like I am, you may think some things and people to which and whom the Lord calls us are less important and should be taken less seriously because the Lord is using that season of our lives, maybe even a really short one, simply to take us from one place to the next. But the Lord when He spoke those words to me wanted me to understand all of His will is important because He is Lord and it is His will and He has a plan and purpose in it all.
We should not miss our opportunities there for whatever the Lord desires whether it is for personal growth in our relationship with Him, testing of our faith, a season of spending extra time reading His Word, meeting someone the Lord sends us to in order to share the Gospel message, having our faith tested before He sends us somewhere where we will need stronger faith, being prepared by the Lord for where He is sending us next, having time uninterrupted to draw closer to Him before going into a busy season of our lives, getting our affairs in order before He leads us to the next chapter of our lives, etc.
Examples of stepping stones? Staying in a geographic location for a short period before the Lord sends us to the big destination to which He is leading us. Living in a neighborhood for just a short while until the Lord opens the door to a long-term opportunity elsewhere. Having someone in our lives just long enough for Him to use that person to teach us something, to test us with something, or to connect us to something into which He wants to bring us like a new job, new calling, new church, etc. Staying at a hotel for a few weeks the Lord has led us to after selling an expensive luxurious home before moving to a low-income community where He has called us to spread the Gospel message and help people in their everyday lives to follow Him.
More examples? Doing a project He gives us just long enough to get training for a mission trip He will call us to in the future. Entering into a long season of much solititude for the purpose of testing our faith in and love for Him before He sends us out to do a certain type of ministry work for Him that requires a much deeper level of faith and perseverance. Taking a season for rest and refreshing before He leads us forward in our life’s calling.
Stepping stones are significant, friend, when they are stones the Lord has chosen for us as He leads us through life. May we live to bring love, honor, praise, and glory to His name even when we are on one of God’s stepping stones before He by His Spirit leads us on!
Please Father, use this message to help people to endure who may be dealing with stepping stones right now and feel like giving up on where they are, on what they are doing, on whatever it is to which you have called them in this season of their lives. Draw them to yourself, lead them to any repentance needed, bring them into a place of total surrender to you, fill them with your Holy Spirit anew and afresh, use them for your glory, and please strengthen them and give them the desire and wherewithal to stay on that stepping stone until it’s your will and time to move them forward. Then lead them on by your Spirit, Lord! AMEN!
