Running for Light

A patchwork quilt of sunlight, blotches of shades of light, patterned across the property, warm where light is, winter South Carolina cold where shade and shadows hover, works its way throughout afternoon across land as the pack of mostly special needs and senior rescued dogs find their warm light. Why, when light breaks forth, do we humans clutch our hands around our hearts in darkness, fooling ourselves into believing that sins in the darkness will not come one day into light? Why do we not go seeking light rather than hole ourselves up in the dank, cold, empty, lonely, despicable, darkness any longer? I looked out at the dogs and saw how easily they find sunlight and park themselves there, soaking it in, reveling in warmth on an otherwise cold day. They choose light. Why do we humans shiver and huddle in the freezing cold, our hearts hardened like icicles, when God’s Son offers His eternal light? Why do we not come soaring out of the shadows and darkness and come running for light?

Paralyzed Mr. Simeon, two-footed Winnie, Freckles missing some toes,
Elijah another miracle dog, enjoying the sunlight!

God calls. Who answers? Repent, He says. He knows our darkness. He convicts. He chastens. He warns. A few come. While all around lies darkness, people dying in the shadows for lack of light, lack of air, lack of breath. Suffocating in sin, falling ever deeper into the stronghold of dark. Refusing the Son. Headed for hell. A patchwork quilt of people. Some in the light. So many in darkness. Blotches of shades of light. Some standing in between. Darkness and light. Not sure which way to go. Maybe back and forth. Light? Darkness?

When all along He longs to spread His light and love around us like a shawl, holding us in His eternal arms, bestowing mercy upon us for the darkness we once clung to, taking us day by day through the pattern of this life as He leads us in His light, heavenward, knowing that all along this road, this walk with Him for us who choose to come after Him, we shall not live in darkness. Not when we have the Son. The Christ. No, not when we have the light. Why wouldn’t we come running for light?

The day is over now. The sun long gone. The cold outside is setting in. The dogs are curled up inside, resting. I am curled up in the arms of the Lord, enjoying safety, refuge, the mercy He has for me, love. I have come running to light. In this patchwork quilt world of darkness and light, I am a seeker of His Truth. I hunger for His Word. I hunger for His love. I learn to let it in, this love so unfamiliar, so different from the world’s. I know where the light is. I run for the light.

“This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.
If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth:
But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.
If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” 1 John 1:5-9 KJV

“Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.” John 8:12 KJV

“And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.” John 3:19 KJV

“And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel.” Mark 1:15 KJV

“That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.” Romans 10:9 KJV
