My mom is the ultimate list maker. She has been for as long as I can remember. Lists for this and lists for that. Lists for herself and lists for my dad and the kids when we were young. Lists for school, trips, events, anything and everything. She is not alone. Loads of people keep TO DO lists, don’t they? Ever striving to check stuff off the lists, list makers look to their lists to remember their goals and to work to meet them. How many of us, however, have TO BE lists in addition to, or instead of, TO DO lists? I recently stumbled upon a TO BE list in the Bible that to me is the ultimate list for those who have repented and place their trust in Christ as Lord.

Long-suffering (patience)
Temperance (self-control)

These are not merely random words. Nor are they simply random aspects of character. These are the fruit that come from the Spirit of God who lives inside followers of Christ the Lord. But if we are honest with ourselves, those of us who proclaim Christ as Lord don’t always have these characteristics checked off on our daily lists, do we? Yet shouldn’t this be our ultimate goal? Shouldn’t it be our highest priority to love and serve the Lord with all our hearts, and to be pleasing to Him? When we learn to abide in Christ, and study the Bible and apply it to our lives, and grow in the image of God, we begin to see ourselves bear this fruit. I don’t know about anybody else, but I have such a very long way to go. I thank God, however, that I have begun walking in the right direction as I ever learn to walk with the Lord.

Are the fruits of God’s Spirit on your TO BE list? Do you aspire by the grace of God and in His strength to be loving, joyful, peaceful, longsuffering (patient), gentle, good, faithful, meek, and temperate? If not, perhaps it is time to make a list – and to aspire daily to keep your list in mind as you, too, learn to walk with the Lord.

Gal 5:22  But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,
Gal 5:23  Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.
Gal 5:24  And they that are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.
Gal 5:25  If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.
