They hurt me so I shouldn’t love them, right? They hurt me so I shouldn’t forgive them, right? They hurt me so I should have vengeance on them, right? They hurt me so I shouldn’t ever help them or give to them or pray for them, right? That’s exactly what this world teaches us, isn’t it? So we should go along with the world’s ways, right? No! We shouldn’t do what the world teaches us. We shouldn’t look to the world as our role model. We shouldn’t think and look and act like the world. We should do what Jesus teaches us and live according to God’s ways and grow in His image not in the world’s. So what should we do concerning the people who hurt us throughout the course of our lives? The answer is clear and simple.
Obey the Lord. In the verses that follow you will find what Jesus has to say about people who hurt us. But please don’t stop there. The Bible is filled with God’s instructions on how to love Him with all our hearts and others as ourselves. Including how to handle the people who hurt us.
“But I tell you not to resist an evil person. But whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also. If anyone wants to sue you and take away your tunic, let him have your cloak also. And whoever compels you to go one mile, go with him two. Give to him who asks you, and from him who wants to borrow from you do not turn away. “You have heard that it was said, ‘YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR and hate your enemy.’ But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven; for He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. For if you love those who love you, what reward have you? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? And if you greet your brethren only, what do you do more than others? Do not even the tax collectors do so? Therefore you shall be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect.” Matthew 5:39-48
Oh God teach us your ways! Oh God perfect your ways in us! Oh God have mercy on us for all the times we have responded wrongly to those who hurt us. Help us to go forward doing right. What’s right in your eyes, oh Lord. It’s too hard to obey you in this without you. We need you to enable us to do what’s right when it comes to those who hurt us. Oh, God, help us to obey you, dear Father, we need you so! Amen!
“For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.” Matthew 6:14-15
You know all those people who have hurt you? Please do what’s right. Do what Jesus says. Love, bless, do good, pray, and forgive! For Jesus’ sake, oh yes!
