“who has saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace which was given to us in Christ Jesus before time began, but has now been revealed by the appearing of our Savior Jesus Christ, who has abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel,” 2 Tim. 1:9-10
Five words in the scriptures above are breathtakingly beautiful – not to mention powerful and amazing – but so easily missed if you hurry through the verses as I confess I so often do in my usual high-speed lifestyle. Know which ones? These. “Not according to our works.” God gives His love, grace, mercy, forgiveness, fellowship, presence, hope, joy, peace, and on and on INCLUDING EVERLASTING LIFE to those who do incredibly great and wonderful works every breath of their lives to earn their way to God’s goodness, right? WRONG! God’s indescribably phenomenally beautiful blessings cannot be earned by our works! They come to us by His love and grace! Through what Christ did on the cross! Through our repentance and turning to Him and His ways. Through faith in Jesus as Lord. Through our lives being dedicated to Him now and forever. “NOT ACCORDING TO OUR WORKS (upper case added)!” We should absolutely live our lives ever producing good works but not to earn God’s amazing blessings, which we can’t earn anyway, but in response to receiving His unfathomable love and goodness! Thank you Lord for giving us through your death and resurrection what we don’t deserve. You! Forever with you! And all your awesome, awesome blessings!
