I am speaking of prescription drugs that are being taken to satisfy the desires of the flesh, in response to a hunger and thirst for something more, for something different, as a way of escape, in answer to an unquenchable lust, out of a need to get rid of emotional pain, to stuff down anger and vengeance, as an antidote to old hurts and bitterness, as a way out of the trials and tribulations of this life, as a refusal to forgive, and oh, how the list does go on. As the world worsens, as personal challenges seem to be ever on the rise due to circumstances out of our control, and as we drown in the consequences of our sins, people seem to be turning more and more to the destructive and deadly abuse of prescription drugs instead of to the life-giving prescription of repentance and faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and to the life-changing medicine of the Word of God, the Bible.
For years now, I have watched a loved one kill himself before my very eyes by choosing to abuse prescription drugs rather than to take God’s prescribed cure for us all of believing in and following Jesus Christ by studying and applying the Word of God to our lives. It is a slow death I have watched, and it is heart wrenching and heart breaking. And it is rampant. It is widespread. It is everywhere. And it is not only the abuse of prescription drugs. It is how all of us have chosen things and chosen people as our gods instead of yielding our hearts and lives to the Lord God almighty, the one true God. We all have our struggles, don’t we? I am no exception. I fall short daily. But I have finally discovered what I wish I had known all along. The prescription we all need.
The one prescription we all must take in order to live an abundant life on earth and spend eternity in heaven with God instead of endure everlasting torment in hell. God does not promise us an easy life. And an abundant life might be harder than imaginable. But the abundance God speaks of, I believe, is the healthy and prosperous and abundant living on this earth that comes as a result of turning away from living our lives according to the ways of this world and choosing to commit to live according to the ways of the Lord. The health, the prosperity, and the abundance, I believe, is that no matter what trials and tribulations we might face, we can find love and hope and peace and joy and the promise of everlasting life in a rock solid relationship with God in heaven through faith in Jesus Christ and a life committed to following Him.
Are you taking God’s prescription?
Repent of your sins, believe the Gospel that Christ died to pay the punishment for your sins, and commit your life from this day forward to following the Lord Jesus Christ through dedicated study of God’s Word and the commitment to not only hear His Word, but to take His prescription and do what the Bible says. It’s God’s Word. He is the Great Physician. And there is no greater prescription than His.
