Are You Neglecting This?

“Then Joshua said to the children of Israel: “How long will you neglect to go and possess the land which the Lord God of your fathers has given you?” Joshua 18:3

Sometimes people tell me my eyes “pop out” because of the way I wear my makeup. My eyes are always in my head, but the way I do my makeup can make them exceedingly stand out. People can see my eyes for years and never notice them. Then they do. This is what happens when the Holy Spirit brings to light something in the Bible for me. I can take no notice or little notice of a scripture as I read over it for long periods of time, even years, and then all of a sudden it exceedingly stands out. It “pops out”, and the Spirit of God moves on my heart and gives me a message. Like with the verse above.

The Lord God had given the Israelites land, but their leader Joshua told the people they had neglected to possess it! God had given them a phenomenal blessing, but they needed to take possession of it! If they didn’t take possession of it, it would be no good to them. The blessing would pass them by.

The verse “popped out” to me because I believe the Spirit of God wanted to show me something about my own life – and perhaps show you something about yours.

Sometimes we “neglect to go and possess the land which the Lord God of…[our]fathers has given…[us]” in that we do not receive from God something He wants to give us. We refuse it. We reject it. We rebel against it. We are disobedient. We turn the other way. We turn our backs on it. We are afraid to receive it. We don’t believe we deserve it. We think there’s something better. We don’t even recognize it. Our flesh wants to go in a different direction. Whatever the reason, we don’t “go and possess the land.” The “land” may be different for you than it is for me or someone else, but the “land” is symbolic of something God has for us.

The “land” could be an everlasting relationship with Him through repentance and faith in Jesus Christ as Lord, it could be His love, mercy, grace, peace, hope, and joy, it could be a relationship He wants us to enter into, a job He wants us to take, a calling He has given us, a missionary trip, a new church, a geographical change, the healing of a broken relationship, adopting a child, having a child naturally, becoming a missionary, a season of rest, a step forward in our lives, favor through a job change, etc. It could even be physical land He wants us to purchase and use to bring glory to His name.

When the Lord desires to give His children something, when He makes His will known to us in any area of our lives, it is our job to humbly thankfully receive His blessing as day by day we choose to walk in His love, in His will, in His ways, for the glory of God almighty, AMEN!

Got you thinking? Why not pray? Let God show you if there’s anything He has for you, if He has made His will known to you in any way, and if it is time for you to move forward and “possess the land.”

Are you neglecting to possess the land? Seek the Lord and let His Spirit lead you forth! His Spirit lives inside Christ’s followers. Turn away from your sins and place your faith in Christ as Lord. Receive the gift of His Holy Spirit and follow the Lord as He leads you forth. Possess the land, friend, possess the land!
