My son, attend to my words; incline thine ear unto my sayings.
Let them not depart from thine eyes; keep them in the midst of thine heart.
For they are life unto those that find them, and health to all their flesh.
Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.
Put away from thee a froward mouth, and perverse lips put far from thee.
Let thine eyes look right on, and let thine eyelids look straight before thee.
Ponder the path of thy feet, and let all thy ways be established.
Turn not to the right hand nor to the left: remove thy foot from evil.
PROVERBS 4:20-27 KJV underline added for effect
God wants your heart (thoughts and feelings) filled with His Word. He expects you to fill yourself up with the Bible and to stay focused on Him and His Word.
Because your issues come out of your heart, your issues will depend on what fills up your heart. If your heart is filled with the world’s values, the world’s ways, and the world’s troubles, your issues will reflect this. If your heart is filled with God’s Word, and you protect your heart from letting in the things and ways of the World, your life will reflect this.
When God tells you not to look to the right or left, He does not want you to be distracted, deterred, influenced, swayed, pulled away, etc. by the world.
Your job is to keep filling your heart and life with His Word on a regular basis, and to guard your heart and life against anything that runs contrary to His Word that might try to get in.
Do you keep the front door of your house wide open when you go to sleep at night in case any thieves and robbers want to come in and steal, kill, or destroy from you? Of course not. The devil’s job is to steal, kill, and destroy (John 10:10) from your heart and life, and your job is to prevent him from doing this. Guard your heart.
Stay focused on the Lord, and fill yourself daily with His Word.
