“For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.” Hebrews 4:12
“For this reason we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding;” Colossians 1:9
I don’t have the greatest memory. It leaves lots to be desired more often than not especially when I’m exhausted which I often am and given I don’t always sleep so well and tend to have a fair amount of stress in my life. So lo and behold I opened the freezer door one day to get a yummy ice-cube style fruit juice Popsicle when a bag of chocolate Hershey’s Kisses yet to be opened literally FLEW out the door and onto the floor. Chocolate I had entirely forgotten I had recently purchased!
Surely it was a SIGN that those Kisses needed to be devoured sometime in the very near future likely lots of them at once. Don’t you think? Wasn’t the Lord telling me to gorge on chocolate?
Joking aside there is believe it or not a message in this. I am of course being humorous with all this about chocolate Kisses and signs from above. Of course the Lord didn’t orchestrate that I would put the chocolate Kisses in such a place in my freezer door that they would eventually tumble outside the door and onto the floor.
Nor I am quite sure would He want me to eat the entire bag all at once let alone even to begin eating them when they fell outside the freezer as I was full and not at all hungry or even in the mood for chocolate right then.
But believe it or not, and you might have this issue yourself or know someone who does, sometimes we take stuff that happens in life and assume it’s a sign from God. That He’s speaking to us in some way through something that happens. And sometimes we simply go too far with this. Sometimes we even go dangerously far in this.
God in His sovereignty may most assuredly when and as He desires speak through our circumstances, but most importantly He always speaks to us THROUGH HIS WORD THE BIBLE and always IN LINE WITH HIS WORD whether He speaks by His Spirit directly to our hearts, through preachers, Christian books, godly counsel, a Christian counselor, loving godly friends, a Bible study or small group fellowship, circumstances, etc. He will NEVER speak anything that does not line up with His Word.
Some people ask God to give them signs, and others believe they are constantly seeing signs from God. Like almost everything that happens must be a sign from God.
The absolute number one way to hear from God is to study the Bible and to spend alone time with Him seeking and hearing and obeying Him and measuring all we hear with the Bible to make sure it does in fact line up.
Let’s watch out for flying chocolate Kisses, shall we? Something tells me God may be okay with me eating some chocolate, but more than likely He’s not going to send it flying to show me His will and bring it to pass!
God will make His will known to us in whatever way He chooses, with or without signs, and let’s be sure to stay extremely close to Him and stay continually in study of His Word to best know we in fact are hearing from Him.
Then, once we do, let’s strive in His love in His strength for His glory to humbly and lovingly and reverently obey Him in all He desires we do for Him!
