You Don’t Need to Understand

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart,

And lean not on your own understanding;

In all your ways acknowledge Him,

And He shall direct your paths.” Proverbs 3:5-6

Sometimes the Spirit of God gives me a scripture to use with the devotionals He gives me to write that doesn’t make sense to me. It’s not the one I would use. I want to keep looking. I want to find the perfect scripture. The one that makes sense to me. The one that’s comfortable for me. The one that feels secure. The one that seems like a good fit. The one that makes me feel good about my writing. The one I feel people will appreciate. One day not for the first time and probably not for the last the Lord gave me a scripture to use that didn’t make sense. I didn’t want to use it. Or, if I used it, I wanted to use another one also. I sought the Lord in my heart. The answer was clear. He wanted me to use the scripture. Not to resist Him. Not to debate. Not to argue. Not to disagree. Not to question. Not to procrastinate. Not to pretend I hadn’t heard. Not to turn the other way. Not to walk away. Not to rebel. Not to justify my way instead of His way. Not to follow me. Not to do what made sense to me. Or what made me feel comfortable, safe, secure, or anything at all. Not to do with my feelings. Not to do with me. Not to wait until I understood if I ever understood. Not to try to figure out why. Then what?

To humbly, lovingly do what He had told me to do because He is Lord. Period. End of conversation. Maybe one day I would find out why God had given me the instruction He had. Maybe not. It didn’t matter. Why? Because it’s not about me. It’s about Him. God. The Lord. Father. Master. Jesus. Christ.

Jesus Christ is Lord. Let me repeat this. Jesus Christ is Lord. It’s not for us to need to understand what the Lord tells us to do. It’s up to us to lovingly submit to Him and obey.

If you’ve been resisting, arguing, disagreeing, debating, questioning, rebelling, etc. because you don’t understand what God is telling you to do, it’s time to stop.

Humble yourself before the Lord. Love the Lord. Obey the Lord. Period. End of conversation.
