Eyes to See
“And Jesus answering said, A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among thieves, which stripped him of his raiment, and wounded him, and departed, leaving him half dead. And by chance there came down a certain priest that way: and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. And likewise a Levite, when he was at the place, came and looked on him, and passed by on the other side. But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was: and when he saw him, he had compassion on him, And went to him, and bound up his wounds, pouring in oil and wine, and set him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn, and took care of him. And on the morrow when he departed, he took out two pence, and gave them to the host, and said unto him, Take care of him; and whatsoever thou spendest more, when I come again, I will repay thee. Which now of these three, thinkest thou, was neighbour unto him that fell among the thieves? And he said, He that shewed mercy on him. Then said Jesus unto him, Go, and do thou likewise.” Luke 10:30-37 underlining added
I have read and heard the so-called good Samaritan story countless times. One day God’s Spirit showed me something I had never SEEN and placed a message on my heart I believe is for us all. The man who was robbed, beaten, and left for dead was SEEN by three people. Three men SAW him. Two passed him by on the other side. One showed him mercy. Many know this story as a lesson about loving our neighbors, but how many of us SEE the message about what we SEE in our everyday lives? I did not SEE.
All three men SAW the man in need. The verses say, “when he SAW him,” “LOOKED on him,” and “when he SAW him (bold added)” in reference to the three men. Only one did something about what he SAW. He showed mercy, loved his neighbor, and went to exceeding lengths to help him.
How many of us are SEEING people every day who are in need of God’s love, mercy, and help whom the Spirit of God is leading us to SEE and show compassion to and help yet we are passing by on the other side? We individually most assuredly cannot help every single person on this earth, but we are responsible for hearing and obeying the voice of the Lord as His Spirit leads us to those to whom He wants each of us personally to show His love and mercy and to proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ!
Is there a person in need, or are there people in need, in your everyday life you have been SEEING but find yourself passing by to the other side? God has given us eyes to SEE, hearts to love, and lives to serve. Are you?
