Feeling Upset

“Wait,” I sensed the Holy Spirit speaking to my heart. “You’re upset right now. This is not the time to make a decision.”

Feeling upset about something? At someone? About a situation? At some people? Feeling angry? Steamed up? Hurt? Bitter? Like you’re headed for losing your temper? Already have? Resentful? Vengeful? Rejected? Feeling like you can’t stop crying or won’t stop if you get started? Like you’ve been taken advantage of? Abused? Worn and weary? Tired of your life’s challenges? Mistreated? Neglected? Someone scam you? Being ignored? A business did something wrong? Anything or everything in the way of something or someone causing you to be upset?

Please consider the warning God gave me. Not to make a decision when I was upset. Decisions should be based on God’s will for us not on our emotions. When we’re upset, we’re prone to be reactive, to act out, to lash out, to be unloving, to seek revenge, to engage in a fight, to be prideful and judgmental, to act bitterly, to feel sorry for ourselves, to be self-centered, to be consumed with self rather than to obey God’s greatest commands to love Him with all our hearts and love others as ourselves, to gossip, to slander people, and any other manner of ungodliness. Even when our decisions have nothing to do with what we’re upset about, we can be prone to allow our being upset to influence the decisions we make. We can be more likely to be self-centered in our decision-making rather than Christ-focused.

What to do instead? Pour out our hearts to the Lord regarding what we’re upset about. Seek and receive love, comfort, healing, help, wisdom, and strength from Him. Seek His forgiveness if we’ve done wrong, seek the forgiveness of others if we have hurt them, forgive those we need to forgive, purge from our hearts, mouths, and actions anything that displeases God, be filled with God’s Holy Spirit who lives inside His followers, focus on God and His Word, seek God’s will, and humbly obey the Lord in any and all decision-making rather than act out of our emotions and being upset.

The Lord wasn’t telling me to never make a decision but instead was showing me I needed to deal with the state of my heart first so any decision I made would be Holy Spirit-led rather than a fleshly decision dishonoring and displeasing to Him.

Feeling upset? When we’re upset, let’s go before the Lord, seek and follow Him, and go forth making decisions that bring glory, honor, praise, pleasure, service, obedience, and joy to the Lord!

Let us not grieve God when we’re upset. Let’s go to God and trust in Him to lead, guide, and provide for us as we walk through the trials of this life believing that He will give us the wisdom and strength to make God-honoring decisions as we go forth!

“Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers. And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, and evil speaking be put away from you, with all malice. And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you.” Ephesians 4:29-32

“But now you yourselves are to put off all these: anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy language out of your mouth. Do not lie to one another, since you have put off the old man with his deeds, and have put on the new man who is renewed in knowledge according to the image of Him who created him… Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering; bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do. But above all these things put on love, which is the bond of perfection. And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; and be thankful.” Colossians 3:8-15
