“Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross.” Phil. 2:5-8
“Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up.” James 4:10
“These six things the Lord hates,
Yes, seven are an abomination to Him:
A proud look,…” Proverbs 6:16-17
“Pride goes before destruction,
And a haughty spirit before a fall.” Proverbs 16:18
“Everyone proud in heart is an abomination to the Lord;
Though they join forces, none will go unpunished.” Proverbs 16:5
I am blessed, humbled, privileged, and thankful beyond measure that in my streets ministry work I get to meet homeless people, prostitutes, criminals, alcoholics, addicts, lost people, broken people, the sick, dying, disabled, hurting, hopeless, depressed, poor, uneducated, as well as the rich, super successful, kind, loving, compassionate, mean, cruel, nasty, arrogant, and many, many other types of people, too.
As much as I LOVE LOVE LOVE the Lord and LOVE LOVE LOVE all people and have a special heart for people in exceeding need like homeless people, sometimes I find myself being chastened by the Lord for having prideful thoughts and feelings. Swiftly He lovingly and mercifully albeit firmly leads me to repentance and returns me to that place of LOVE LOVE LOVE – His love that fills my heart when I open myself to His Spirit filling me to overflowing.
But alas, sigh, I am human and have my thankfully ever briefer periods of falling into pride and what goes with it. Like judgment, criticism, being standoffish, distancing myself, being unkind, even mean sometimes, as much as I don’t like to admit it. Then, in those times, I need to be reminded of what I share with you now.
GET OFF YOUR HIGH HORSE! Have you ever heard the expression? In plain English, it means STOP BEING PRIDEFUL. What does the Lord say in biblical terminology? That we need to HUMBLE OURSELVES! Pride is an ABOMINATION to God, it is SIN AGAINST GOD, and over and again He tells us He will deal with pride. And it’s not a pretty picture to consider.
Friend, we are to LOWER OURSELVES and to LIFT UP THE LORD JESUS CHRIST! He is our perfect role model. He chose to HUMBLE HIMSELF and to show us what it looks like to truly LOVE in His name. To humbly, mercifully, patiently, kindly, compassionately, warmly, sweetly, tenderly, gently LOVE. To LOVE HIM and to LOVE OTHERS!
Christ’s love is NOT a prideful love. It’s humble love. The kind of love to which we are called.
Today, and for all the rest of our lives and forever, may we who follow Jesus follow His example. Humbling ourselves continually. Repenting quickly when the Spirit of God shows us we have been prideful. Getting off our high horses so to speak.
And lowering ourselves in love and adoration before the Lord. And lowering ourselves before others. That the world around us may see Christ in us and Christ through us. His love in us and through us. His humility in us and through us. His life in and through us. As He uses us to draw people to Himself through repentance and belief in Him as Lord and total devotedness to Him now and forever! To Him who is forever Savior, forever Lord, and forever King, AMEN!
Humble, humble, humble, let’s be humble! Let’s humble ourselves before Him and others for the glorious glory of the Lord forevermore!
