Get the Wax Out of Your Ears

Ever wonder why you’re not hearing from God? Or why you’re not hearing very clearly? You might want to get the wax out of your ears. How would I know? I’ve had plenty of trouble through the years hearing from God, and I’ve also had seasons of hearing clearly. I am reminded of my grandfather decades ago when my mom had to buy an ear wax removal system for him.

As far as I recall, my grandfather didn’t need a hearing aid. Nor did he need a new pair of ears. What he needed is help getting the wax out that was clogging his ears. How could he possibly hear well with his ear canals all clogged up? I don’t need a hearing aid to hear from God. Nor do I need a new set of ears to hear from Him. God doesn’t usually speak into my ears at all – unless He’s speaking through somebody else. Mostly, God speaks into my heart. And, if my heart is all clogged up with the wax of sin and accompanying junk, I can’t hear anything at all – or very little, anyway.

When my heart is full of fear, bitterness, vengeance, worry, doubt, unbelief, envy, strife, rebellion, hurt, pity, pride, and a host of other forms of wax, I am in deep trouble. How can I possibly hear His voice clearly when my heart is bursting at the seams with trouble?

I find it interesting to read the following scriptures. Why? Check out the word “wax” as you read along:

Mat 24:4  “And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man deceive you.
Mat 24:5  For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many.
Mat 24:6  And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet.
Mat 24:7  For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places.
Mat 24:8  All these are the beginning of sorrows.
Mat 24:9  Then shall they deliver you up to be afflicted, and shall kill you: and ye shall be hated of all nations for my name’s sake.
Mat 24:10  And then shall many be offended, and shall betray one another, and shall hate one another.
Mat 24:11  And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many.
Mat 24:12  And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold.
Mat 24:13  But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.” KJV

These scriptures refer to deception for those who are misled and follow someone other than Christ. Deception. Offense. Betrayal. Hatred. Iniquity. More deception. Then what? Then love “shall wax cold” (Matthew 24:12 KJV).

Though these scriptures are prophetic of what shall happen on a wide-scale basis in our world – and what is actually now happening in our world – I can also apply them to myself. What do you think happens when I am deceived and my heart fills up with everything but love? My spiritual ears are then not in tune with God.

So what can I do about this? I can’t run to the store, buy an ear wax removal kit, and unclog my physical ears to hear from God. Nor will a hearing aid help.

Quite simply, through confession of my sins, repentance, forgiveness, renewing of my mind by study of God’s Word, and transformation through application of God’s Word and by the power of the Holy Spirit, guess what? What once was an almost entirely clogged heart becomes an open canal – like the ear canal – to hear from the Lord.

For me, this is not a one-time ear wax removal kit. Nor is it about changing hearing aid batteries every few months. This is a daily process of following Jesus.

Want to hear from God? Get the wax out of your ears. Get the wax out of your heart. And let God’s love that now has free reign to flow into and through your heart carry with it the voice and words of the Lord.
