“Keep [guard in some versions]your heart with all diligence,
For out of it spring the issues of life.” Proverbs 4:23
“Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things.” Phil. 4:8
“Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth.” Col. 3:8
If you think the devil just wants to kill, steal, and destroy (John 10:10) your life, you’re wrong. He also wants your mind. In fact, that’s one of his biggest tactics it seems to kill, steal, and destroy as far as your life is concerned. Because if he can get a hold of your mind, he can gain access to your life. And if he can gain access to your life, then he can do his best to try to keep you from entrusting your life to the Lord Jesus Christ for the promise of a forever relationship with God if you haven’t already committed your life to Christ.
And he can do his best if you’re already a believer in Christ as Lord to harm your relationship with God and to try to wreck your ability and desire to love and serve the Lord with ALL your heart. This is exactly why I found the Lord one day reminding me to be watchful of what was happening to my mind that day. Maybe you wonder. Maybe you can relate.
My mind over and again kept going back to a certain person, to a certain situation, to my relationship with that person, to the personal choices that person was making, to what I thought of those choices, to the way the person had lashed out at me, to what the person thought of me, to what would happen to the person in the future given the person’s choices, and on and on.
No matter how many times I tried in my own strength to break free from the thoughts, I kept going back to them. And each time my mind was occupied with those thoughts, guess what. My mind was unavailable to focus on Jesus, on the Bible, on my ministry work, on others, on loving and serving them in Christ’s name, on caring for my sweet special needs dogs, etc. I kept drifting away in my mind from the Lord and His work for me that day because my mind kept going back to where it shouldn’t have gone in the first place.
God tells us what to think about! Look at the verses above! He also tells us to guard our hearts! I wasn’t doing either until His Spirit reminded me I had to get my act together. My mind together, to be most accurate. I needed to hand all those thoughts over to the Lord, to purge my mind of them, to seek a fresh filling of God’s Spirit, to refocus my mind on the Lord and scriptures, and to get on with the day. And to the way the Lord wanted me to live that day. And all days. Loving and serving him and others with all my heart – and mind – for the glory of God almighty in Christ, AMEN!
Need to get your mind off something or someone? Get your mind off it! Get your mind onto the Lord! And onto His Word! And onto loving and serving Him and others in His name! FOR HIS GLORY! AMEN!
