“Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” James 14:6
“Your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying,
“This is the way, walk in it,”” Isaiah 30:21
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart,
And lean not on your own understanding;
In all your ways acknowledge Him,
And He shall direct your paths.” Proverbs 3:5-6
It sounds good. Seems good. Looks good. It may even be good. But is it God’s will for you? Not everything good is God’s will for us. Not everything good is God’s will for you. Or me. Or any of us. Know what I mean? I’ve learned this lesson the hard way.
Oh, how many times I have gone running full speed ahead, full force, into an opportunity because it looked and sounded good – and may well have been good. Only to discover that it was NOT God’s will for me. At least at that time. If not ever. But how can that be?
Not everything good is God’s will for us. It may be. It may not be. Not every opportunity is God’s will for us. It may be. It may not be. Not every door in our lives has been opened by God for us. It may be. It may not be. Living our lives and basing our decisions on our circumstances, thoughts, and feelings, on what we can see, hear, taste, and smell, on open doors and obvious opportunities, on what is right in front of us, etc. is not the way we are called to live.
We are to live with our hearts and lives submitted to God and His Word. We are to live for Him and Him alone. Whether He leads us to what’s right in front of us. Or not. Whether He wants us to do the good thing we have an opportunity to do. Or whether He wants us NOT to do that good thing and to do something else instead. We are to live for Jesus, not us. According to God’s plans, not ours. According to His will, whether obvious or not. According to His ways, always.
Assuming something is God’s will is not the right way to go. Even if it is good, it may not be for us. Not now anyway. Maybe not ever.
The right way to go is the way of the Lord. To seek Him, pray to Him, wait on Him, study His Word, seek godly counsel, wait on Him, wait on Him, wait until we’re clear we have heard from Him and then follow His lead forward.
He will show us the way to go. His way is always the right way. After all, Jesus is the way. The truth. And the life. Let’s live for Him, friend. For Him alone!
Is this your will, God? Let’s ask Him. Let’s not assume if it’s good it’s His will for us. Let’s pray and wait until He answers. Then let’s answer Him back. To whatever He tells us. Yes, Lord. Yes!
Many times in recent years, I took on ministry opportunities that were perfectly good. They were about loving and serving God and others. Though good, they were not God’s will for me at least at that time if ever. Instead of waiting on the Lord and obeying Him, I jumped right in. I ended up distracted from what He was calling me to do and unable to do a good job with what His will for me actually was.
I had to repent and return to what we all need to do. Humbly lovingly follow Jesus wherever He leads us for the glory of the Lord God almighty. Needing to say no when He wanted me to say no, and yes when He wanted me to say yes. I still fall into this if I’m not careful. This jumping in rather than waiting and following. I’m learning. I’m growing. Are you?
Follow the Lord, friend. Follow Jesus! Yes, say yes to the Lord! Yes, I will follow you, Lord. Yes. No matter your will. No matter the cost to my flesh. I am yours Lord. I submit to you. Lead me. I will follow. Give me the strength to follow. Yes!
