The Right Attitude
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.” Galatians 5:22-23
“Please help me have a good attitude,” I prayed to the Lord.
If anyone through the years has been the Queen of Bad Attitude, in my opinion anyway, it is me. For decades until I came to believe in Jesus Christ as Lord, my attitude was atrocious. Then it changed overnight, right? Wrong! I readily confess even as a Christ follower, for years I maintained a poor attitude. Only in recent years, the more I follow Jesus, the more I read the Bible, the more I know God’s love for me, the more I love Him, have I begun to have the right attitude. But still, what a long, long way I have to go.
The right attitude? One of love. Of mercy. Of grace. Of peace. Of thanksgiving. Of kindness. Of goodness. Of hope. Of contentment. Of generosity. Of giving. Of gentleness. Of patience. Of being positive. Of having a bright outlook. Etc. The right attitude is taught to us by God in the Bible. It is an attitude we who follow Jesus are to maintain. And we are to repent when the Spirit of God shows us we have fallen short of having the right attitude.
I don’t know about you, but when I’m uncomfortable, unhappy, unsettled, when I face circumstances I don’t like, when I feel overwhelmed, when people are mean to me, when life doesn’t go my way, etc., that’s when I most easily fall into having the wrong attitude.
This very morning, the Lord showed me how I was grieving Him with my anger and impatience and fear regarding my current ministry location and the challenges I unexpectedly face regarding going to the next location He has planned for me. I repented. He brought me back to the right attitude. An attitude that please Him. Honors Him. Obeys Him. Loves Him.
“Please help me to have a good attitude,” I prayed to the Lord.
I wish I could tell you a good attitude comes naturally and continually to me. It does not. I wish I could say in my own strength I can maintain the right attitude. This isn’t true.
But I can tell you this. The Lord will help us to do what pleases Him. So I’m counting on Him to help me with my attitude so more and more I can live to love, honor, revere, bless, please, obey, serve, and glorify Him!
Need help with your attitude? Turn to the Lord and to the Bible so you can join me in having the right attitude. One that brings glory to the Lord, AMEN!
