Goodbye Independence

““Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord,
And whose hope is the Lord.
For he shall be like a tree planted by the waters,
Which spreads out its roots by the river,
And will not fear when heat comes;
But its leaf will be green,
And will not be anxious in the year of drought,
Nor will cease from yielding fruit.” Jeremiah 17:7-8

The July 4 Independence Day holiday, celebrating America’s independence from Britain, isn’t the only independence celebration. Our world glorifies independence, doesn’t it? When children are old enough to become independent from their parents, when the elderly can live independently and don’t need to go into nursing homes, when young people get their drivers licenses and can now drive without depending on their parents to get places, when students graduate and are now independent from their schools, when young people move out of their parents’ homes, when prisoners get out of jail and are now independent, when people living in homeless shelters get their own housing and are now independent from shelter living, when people on welfare and food stamps get jobs and are now independent from social services, when people on the psychiatric ward are helped and can now go free, when hospital patients are discharged and now independent, when disabled people are taught skills and learn how to live independently, and the list goes on, doesn’t it? Independence really is celebrated so very often in our society, isn’t it? But while independence may be celebrated, and glorified, in many instances, and while much of it can be good, there is one kind of independence that is dangerous, and ultimately deadly, and it’s an independence we need to shed, to get rid of, to leave behind. And that’s independence from God almighty.

God created humanity to love and worship and serve and glorify and enjoy and praise and obey and experience Him and His love and fellowship forever, and to love others as ourselves, and while sin forever separates us from perfectly holy God, when we repent from our sins and turn to Jesus Christ as Lord who died on the cross to pay our sin penalty and was raised from the dead, genuinely devoting our lives to Him, we are forgiven and promised an everlasting relationship with God. This eternal relationship, beginning now, and going on forever in heaven, is based on our DEPENDENCE on God, not our INDEPENDENCE from Him.

Yet our human sin nature to depend on and trust in ourselves, and even in others, runs totally contrary to DEPENDENCE on God, and the truth is that even for those of us who have repented of a lifestyle of sin and placed our faith in Christ as Lord, we can still struggle day by day with DEPENDENCE versus INDEPENDENCE.

We were created to FULLY DEPEND on God, to TRUST HIM in all things, in all ways, with everything and with everyone, fully yielding ourselves to Christ as Savior, yes, AND AS LORD of our lives.

Should we not examine our lives and see where we stand when it comes to DEPENDENCE ON GOD? Are we still trying to be INDEPENDENT in certain areas of our lives, to not depend on Him? INDEPENDENCE when it comes to God should not be celebrated. It should be repented from. If there is to be a celebration, it should be that God in His amazing love is so awesome, so beautiful, so glorious, so powerful, so phenomenal, so indescribably wonderful, that He is totally worthy of all our love, of all our trust, and of our full DEPENDENCE – ON HIM!

Why not examine your life today and see where you stand in the way of DEPENDENCE ON GOD? If the Spirit of God shows you areas of INDEPENDENCE FROM GOD, places where you are not trusting Him, not relying on Him, and are living according to your own flesh and according to the world’s ways rather than TRUSTING IN HIM, DEPENDING ON HIM, say goodbye to your independence. And place your heart, and your life, wholly in the tender loving almighty hands of Jesus Christ who is Lord forevermore! May this not be a one-time occurrence. Whenever the Spirit of God shows us who follow Him ways and areas in which we are pridefully asserting INDEPENDENCE FROM GOD, may we repent and consciously, decidedly DEVOTE OURSELVES WHOLLY TO GOD, TRUSTING IN HIM WITH EVERYTHING, AND WITH EVERYONE, WITH ALL GLORY TO HIS HOLY MOST PRECIOUS EVERLASTING ALMIGHTY NAME!
