“For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light (for the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness, righteousness, and truth), finding out what is acceptable* to the Lord.” Ephesians 5:8-10
“I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable* to God, which is your reasonable service [some translations use the word “worship” here]. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable* and perfect will of God.” Romans 12:2
“Now may the God of peace who brought up our Lord Jesus from the dead, that great Shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant, make you complete in every good work to do His will, working in you what is well pleasing in His sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen.” Hebrews 13:20-21
*[acceptable per Strong’s concordance comes from the Greek word εὐάρεστος, ον which includes in its meaning “well-pleasing (especially to God)”].
Maybe it sounds like a crazy prayer to you, but I hope you’ll think about it. I have found myself saying prayers like this. Prayers I never would have even considered before.
Help me to love you the way you want to be loved. Help me to worship you the way you want to be worshiped. Help me to honor you the way you want to be honored. Help me to praise you the way you want to be praised. Help me to glorify you the way you want to be glorified. Fill me with your Spirit and help me to bring glory to your name.
Why would I ask God to help me to love, worship, honor, praise, and glorify Him the way He desires? Because of the heights and depths of my ever-growing love for Him. Because the more I know Him, the more I cling to Him, the more I pursue Him, the more I live for Him, the more I seek Him, the more I have more of Him, the more I experience Him, the more I love Him, and the more I love Him, the more I want to please Him. The less my life becomes about me. The more my life becomes about Him and others.
When we really, really, really love someone, aren’t we desperate to know how to express our love in a way most pleasing to that person? Isn’t genuine love for another not about us but about that person? Should it not be even more – and most – so when it comes to the Lord?
I believe the Lord answers me day by day when I pray prayers like this and in my heart’s cry to please Him, leading me by His Spirit to live my life in a way that brings Him joy, pleasure, honor, and glory. And, oh, oh, oh, how I yearn to make my Father, my Lord, my Savior, my King, my forever God happy, pleased, and blessed beyond measure. How could I not given who He is, what He has done, is doing, and will do, given His nature and character, His unending love and mercy, His graciousness and wonderfulness, His oh, how I could go on?
It’s not a crazy prayer after all, is it? It’s the prayer of a woman who is crazily and indescribably vehemently, ebulliently, and passionately in love with and in pursuit of Christ and more of Christ.
Let us love, honor, and adore the Lord the way He desires to be most pleasing to Him! The Lord teaches and guides us by His Spirit and His Word in how He wants us to live for Him. Are we listening? Are we studying? Are we doing? Let us seek Him in how we can best and most effectively be pleasing to God almighty, King of Kings, Lord of Lords, Great Shepherd, good Lord, great Lord, awesome Lord, forever!
