Ever seen someone so shocked and excited at the same time that he literally doesn’t know what to do with himself? Like he could jump up and down in the air a zillion times, shout at the top of his lungs, and celebrate for the rest of his life? That’s just about how excited a homeless man was not when he got a job, not when he was given a warm place to sleep in the brutally cold New York City winter, not when someone told him he had won the lottery, oh no, none of this at all.
“How are you?” I said.
That is all it took. He explained to me that he was blown away by my simple kindness in a world in which most people don’t even acknowledge he exists and in which he watches adults tell their children to look in a different direction so they don’t see him.
I actually knew how he felt because I have faced tons of rejection my whole life and because the simplest act of kindness from someone friend or stranger for me just about melts my heart.
Let this be a reminder to us all that God’s greatest commands are to love Him with all our hearts most assuredly – and TO LOVE OTHERS AS OURSELVES. The Lord doesn’t tell us to love some of our neighbors and turn the other way when we see others. He tells us to love. Plain and simple.
So friend, LOVE!
“And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ This is the first commandment. And the second, like it, is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.”” Mark 12:30-31
