I have a long, long history of fear and worry even as a Christ follower, and the Lord is ever working on me to repent when I get clogged up with it and to practice day by day living by faith in Him, putting my trust in Him, purging myself of fear and worry, and making faith-based decisions rather than fear-based decisions.
We should not make decisions in our everyday lives based on fear and worry. We should make decisions based on love for and faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. Decisions that will please, honor, and glorify God. Decisions that line up with God’s ways as He teaches us in the Bible. Our motives in life for our decisions and actions should not be fear. We are to live by faith!
Sad to say, countless times over the years I have made worry-based decisions without even recognizing that I was worrying! Without even seeing the fear! Instead of putting my trust in the Lord and following Him and His will for me. I am learning to be conscious of my motives. And I am learning to purify my heart continually whereby I get rid of what displeases the Lord.
Please check your motives, friend. Don’t live by worry and fear. Live by faith in the Lord Jesus Christ!
I love how this verse associates fear with bondage and then goes on to associate the Holy Spirit of God who lives inside His followers and empowers us and leads us through life with being God’s adopted children and with His being our glorious heavenly Father!
“For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.” Romans 8:15
When I fall into fear and worry, I am not trusting in the Lord. When I am not trusting in the Lord, my focus is not on Him. When my focus is not on Him, I am forgetting who He is in relation to me. Lord of Lords, King of Kings, Savior, master, and FATHER! When I remember who He is, I am comforted and compelled and inspired to get rid of the fear and worry and to PUT MY TRUST IN MY FATHER IN HEAVEN – forever Lord, Savior of the world, almighty God! Jesus the Christ!
When I am focused on the Lord and the Bible and God’s will for me, I desire to make faith-based decisions. I want for my motives to be pure and pleasing to the Lord. To my Father. I wish I could tell you I wave my magic wand and the fear just goes permanently away. Truth is I’m a work in progress. And the Lord is ever refining me and growing me. He is teaching me His ways. Most especially the way of faith and love!
If you ever find fear to be your motive, friend, TURN TO THE LORD! TURN TO THE BIBLE! Surrender yourself to Him! Repent of the worry and fear. Put your trust in Jesus. Yield yourself to the Lord as He teaches you to live by faith not fear.
Though I believe this verse in context refers to serving the Lord and proclaiming Him to the world, I believe its powerful message is applicable to our lives as a whole. I find great comfort and encouragement in it. Hoping you do as well!
“For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.” 2 Timothy 1:7
