L is for Lust: Desiring the Ungodly

I know a man who has been consumed with lust for as long as I have known him. And oh how I pointed my finger for years at his insatiable hunger for sexual immorality. Little did I know that lust isn’t limited to having insatiable cravings for what is sexually immoral, but it does have everything to do with desiring what is ungodly. So much for pointing fingers. Not only was I filled with the sin of judgment, pride, and condemnation, but I was utterly ignorant of how we ALL struggle with lust of one variety of another. Anytime we are obsessed with satisfying an urgent, aching, desperate hunger for something that goes against the Lord and His ways, we are struggling with lust. And God teaches us in His Word that we need to turn away from the lusts we have tried so desperately to satisfy and to turn to Him and work on becoming holy like He is. In plain English, God tells us to ABSTAIN from the lusts that have controlled so many of our lives.

When we are born again by repenting of our sins and believing the Gospel that Jesus died on the cross to pay the penalty for our sins, we are forgiven, promised everlasting life, and must now set out on a life dedicated to godliness, purity, and holiness. God sets us apart as His holy people, but we must now learn to act the part. The finger I was pointing at the man who has been consumed with sexual lust is the same finger I needed to point at my own heart and life so that I could learn day by day to turn away from the lusts of my flesh that crave fulfillment – like losing my temper, going back to the eating disorder with which I have struggled on and off for years, hurting people with my words, whatever it may be – and choose to live by the love and grace and power of God the way He has called me. The same way He has called us all. To live godly lives, ever studying His Word and making the commitment to lay aside our own fleshly desires and to live lives that bring Him praise, honor, and glory.

1Pe 1:14  As obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorance: 
1Pe 1:15  But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; 
1Pe 1:16  Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy. 

1Pe 2:11  Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul; 

1Pe 2:12  Having your conversation honest among the Gentiles: that, whereas they speak against you as evildoers, they may by your good works, which they shall behold, glorify God in the day of visitation.
