“Trust in Him at all times, you people;
Pour out your heart before Him;
God is a refuge for us. Selah” Psalm 62:8

Decades ago, when my Mom contacted me in college to tell me she had to put my childhood dog to sleep, I knew exactly what to do with my grief. I got drunk, shut the door to my college room, and pushed my friends away. It never crossed my mind alcohol wouldn’t help but hurt, and that friends would have been a blessing not a curse. Pushing friends away the Lord has sent to love and bless us is not a good thing, but worst of all – and most tragic – is when we push the Lord away.

Yet sometimes that’s exactly what we do when we go through hard stuff. Sometimes we build walls around our hearts and wall ourselves off from God. We distance ourselves from Him. We may stop reading the Bible, stop praying, stop going to church, stop reaching out to Christian friends. Or, we may still read the Bible, pray, go to church, and reach out to Christian friends, but we may just go through the motions of it all and keep the Lord at arm’s length. We may be angry at God and blame Him for what we’re going through. Or we may be afraid our hurting hearts will hurt even more if we let Him near to us. We may not trust Him to help us because we feel so broken. Regardless the reason, or if we don’t even have a reason, we may lay Jesus aside and try to go it alone.

Friend, if you’re hurting, if you’re broken, if you’re struggling, if you’re confused, if you have questions, if you’re terrified, if you’re worrying, if you’re lost, if you’re feeling forsaken, if you’ve been betrayed, if you can’t get off drugs, if you just got dumped by a loved one, whatever your hardship, please don’t push God away. Please cry out to the Lord Jesus Christ, turn from your sins, put your trust in Him as Lord, devote your life entirely to Him, open up your heart, pour it all out to Him, open up the Bible, read it and learn how God wants you to live, draw near to the Lord, call out to Him over and again, let Him near, let Him in, let Him speak to your heart, let Him help and hold and heal you, don’t think of Him as simply faraway God in the heavens, let His Spirit fill you as His follower, and draw ever closer to Him, and Him to you, oh yes!

Don’t push God away. Call out to Him to please come near!
