“He who follows righteousness and mercy
Finds life, righteousness, and honor.” Proverbs 21:21……..

“teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in the present age, looking for the blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ,” Titus 2:12-13……….

Only in New York City would I be walking down the sidewalk and see a man walking his big pet pig down the sidewalk on a leash. He wasn’t having the easiest time, mind you. The man wasn’t having an easy time walking the pig, and the pig wasn’t having an easy time being walked in New York City – on a leash for heaven’s sake!

Don’t ask me why. My Mom used to tell me I had a wild imagination. Pretty much true. When I think about that pig in New York City, I think of what it’s like for us humans to go from living a lifestyle of sin according to the world’s ways to living a lifestyle of believing in Jesus Christ as Lord and learning to live according to God’s ways as He teaches us in the Bible. Culture shock to the nth degree. So totally opposite of what we’re used to that it pretty much seems impossible. And the only way we can do it is to learn to be led by God on His loving leash as He teaches us a totally new way of life.

I would imagine there are days that pig wants to go back and wallow in the muck of its old life figuring it would be a lot more comfortable and familiar to live the old way. But probably over time the pig realizes this new way of life is a whole lot better. Maybe over time the pig will even learn to stop fighting the leash and be excited and thankful to walk forward with its new owner, master, and friend.

Friend, following Jesus is a whole new way of life. Sometimes we may want to run back to the old way of living. But the right way to go isn’t backwards to a lifestyle of the muck of sin. It’s to go forward being lovingly and mercifully and graciously and generously led by the Lord God almighty, AMEN!
