One day the Lord impressed upon my heart He loves me even when I am not doing anything for Him. That’s right. Even when I am not serving Him. Even when I am not doing my ministry work. Even when I’m resting. It was not the first time He spoke this to my heart nor likely the last time.
See, I came to believe long ago that love needs to be earned and worked for both in receiving it in the first place as well as to hold onto it and not lose it. I imagined this was true with people. Then I imagined it was true with God. But God didn’t create love to be something to be earned or worked for. His greatest commands are to love Him with all our hearts and to love others as ourselves. In one word, what are His greatest commands? LOVE! Love was not designed to be worked for and earned. It is we humans in our sinfulness who have messed up love and made it conditional.
Truth? The Lord’s love cannot be earned nor worked for. It is given to us through Jesus’ death and resurrection and received through turning from our sins and believing in Him as Lord who died to pay our sin penalty and was raised from the dead and truly turning our hearts and lives over to God and His ways as He teaches us in the Bible.
We receive God’s love and forgiveness and are given a forever relationship with Him instead of death, hell, and the lake of fire which is the final and forever destination of all humans because of our sins when we don’t turn our lives over to the Lord Jesus Christ.
Yes, that’s right. His love is given to us by His grace through faith in Jesus as Lord! Serving Jesus is not to earn and gain and keep His love but is to be an expression of our love for and obedience to Him. And our love for and obedience to the Lord is to be how we respond to His magnificent love for us! The starting place? The love of Jesus!
Oh, how magnificent is His unfathomably wonderful everlasting love for us!
Do you know the love of Jesus, friend? Personally? Intimately? Day by day, do you experience His beautiful, lovely, amazing, awesome love for you? Have you received Jesus Christ as Lord? Is your life totally devoted to Jesus? Are you filled with His love? Are you pouring out His love to others? Love, love, love, friend. It all begins with the love of the Lord Jesus Christ, yes! And with our decision to turn from our sins, receive Him as Lord, and live utterly for Him, yes indeed! Love! Love, love, LOVE!
Lord, help us to believe and receive your love each and every day! Remind us we cannot earn your glorious love. Help us to experience and feel it. Help us to rejoice in it. Help us to return your love to you, beloved Father, and help us to pass it along to others. AMEN!
