The Man Who Hid His Drink

“This is the message which we have heard from Him and declare to you, that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all. If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.” 1 John 1:5-7

“Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.”” John 8:12

“For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.
“He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. For everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed. But he who does the truth comes to the light, that his deeds may be clearly seen, that they have been done in God.”” John 3:17-21
One bright sunny afternoon a man who struggles with drinking and knows I love Jesus saw me walking in his direction and quickly hid his drink with the hope and intention I wouldn’t see it. I’m not sure he realized I did in fact see the drink before he tucked it away out of sight, but that’s not the point.
When we’re doing something wrong, we may be able to hide our wrongdoing from the people around us whether friends or strangers or even those closest to us, but WE CANNOT HIDE ANYTHING FROM GOD ALMIGHTY. He sees it ALL – absolutely EVERYTHING about us – right down to the thoughts and feelings in our hearts.
There are two great tragedies when it comes to trying to hide our sin against God.
1. The Lord is the very one we need to humble ourselves before to ask for and to receive His forgiveness and salvation and strength to come free from and overcome our sins. He is the only one who can bring us out of the darkness of sin and the end result of sin which is death, hell, and the lake of fire forever apart from Him not to mention all the ugly consequences of sin right here right now on this earth.
He is the only one who can bring us into the promise of everlasting life not to mention a love, joy, peace, and light-filled life right here right now on this earth when we turn from our sins and believe Christ died to pay our sin penalty and was raised from the dead whereby we truly devote our lives to God and His ways.
The Lord is the Savior we need! The redeemer we need! The healer we need! The deliverer we need! The comforter we need!
The restorer we need! The provider we need! The sovereign almighty all powerful all knowing glorious forever God in whose fellowship we can be forever when we turn from our sins and turn utterly to Him!
When we try to hide our sin, we cling to the darkness and live in the devil’s dangerous and ultimately deadly bleak and barren and sorrowful world.
2. When we try to hide our sins, we also hold ourselves back from the love, help, encouragement, support, etc. we can receive from the people through whom God chooses to bless us and help us live the life to which He has called us. A life lived in the light, a life lived in His love, a life lived in His blessedness, a life lived for Him!
If you are trying to hide your sin in the darkness, come to Christ, my friend. Cry out to God in Christ for mercy and forgiveness. Believe in Him as Lord. Follow Him as Lord. Live for Him as Lord. If you already believe in Jesus, but are trying to hide any sin in the dark, turn back to the Lord.
He didn’t create us to live in darkness. He doesn’t want us headed for hell and the lake of fire. He created us to love, worship, praise, honor, adore, humble ourselves before, bow down to, serve, enjoy, and experience Him forevermore as we love and serve others and help them to find and follow Him as well.
To God be the glory, my friend, come out of the dark. Walk in His light! Forever! AMEN!
