Missing the Past

I called out to one of my handicapped ministry dogs, “Abby!” only to immediately remember after 15.5 years of her being in my care I had very recently lost her. That is when this message came to me. When we get caught up in missing the past, which I readily confess I have spent way too much of my life doing, we run the risk of missing the present and even the future because our focus is on the people, places, and things of what lies behind us and our eyes, hearts, minds, and lives are preoccupied and unavailable to focus on the Lord, His Word, and His will for our lives TODAY and GOING FORTH.

There is nothing wrong per se with grief and sadness EXCEPT that for some of us it becomes all-consuming, takes over our hearts and lives, and we get stuck in it like quicksand and find ourselves going down, down, down – and wallow in the past instead of looking to the Holy Spirit of God who lives inside His followers to lead us day by day FORWARD.

I am extremely sensitive, very emotional, and can easily fall prey to missing, missing, missing, anything and everyone from long ago, from some time ago, and even from 5 minutes ago to the point I am overwhelmed by it, consumed with it, can’t see beyond it, and can’t imagine ever getting past it not even for a moment. As though there is nothing more to my life than the missing nor will ever be. This is a distraction from the Lord and His will for me. It is a trap. And it is dangerous. And I imagine the devil loves it because I can become paralyzed by it all to the point I lose my focus on the Lord, on His Word, on His will for my life, on loving and serving Him, on loving and serving others. Because what could and should be merely some sorrow cast onto the Lord and some tears here and there through the trials of this life can suck me in whereby the present and future seem to just slip away.

Friend, please be careful. When your heart hurts, and you are missing someone or something, go to the Lord. Pray to Him. Pour your heart out to Him. Cast your emotions upon Him. Seek His love, mercy, grace, hope, joy, and comfort. Reach out to His followers for love and prayer if and as He leads you. But please don’t do as I have so often done. Don’t get stuck in the missing. Don’t get stuck in the past. Humble yourself before God almighty and make yourself available now and each and every day to love and worship and praise and adore and obey and serve and glorify Him now – and forever and ever AMEN! And trust the Lord to bring you healing and comfort as you pour out your heart to Him as you go forth!
