Please Don’t Quit

“And David was greatly distressed; for the people spake of stoning him, because the soul of all the people was grieved, every man for his sons and for his daughters: but David encouraged himself in the Lord his God.” 1 Sam. 30:6

If the Lord has given you something to do, or someone to be with, or a relationship to be in, and you are totally clear it’s His will, and you have dug into God’s Word to make sure whatever it is, or whomever it is, is in line with God’s Word which is God’s will, and you have prayed, and sought Him, and heard His Spirit speaking to your heart, and sought godly counsel as needed to confirm what you believe to be His will, then I have a message for you.

Please don’t quit.

I write this to you, whoever you are, right as my flesh is screaming that it wants to quit something the Lord has given me to do, right as the devil is screaming at me that I should go ahead and quit, right when there would be nothing easier in the world for me to do than to quit, and precisely when the Lord is giving me the very same message I believe He has compelled me to give to you.

Please don’t quit.

No matter how tired you are, how worn out, how exhausted, how stressed, how frustrated, how discouraged, how burdened, how weighed down, how terrified, how hurt how bitter how resentful, how sick and tired of whatever or whomever it is He has given you, no matter how frenzied, busy, overloaded, no matter how whatever, absolutely whatever, you are, please hear me when I say this.

Please don’t quit.

I used be one of the biggest quitters in the world. When it came to just about anything. I was too consumed with myself and what I wanted. Too caught up in what was easy and obvious and comfortable. Too convinced we’re supposed to live for ourselves and not for others and certainly not for the Lord. Too weak to persevere. To carry on. To go forth. To go forward. To keep on. Keeping on.

But the Lord has taught me HOW to persevere, and, most importantly, He has taught me WHY to persevere.

Here’s WHY. Because Jesus Christ is Lord, and I am His servant. I am God’s child, and I live for Him. I persevere for Him. I am faithful to Him. I want to please Him. I want to express my love for Him in obedience.

Here’s HOW. I pour out my heart to the Lord. I tell Him how I feel. All of it, even the icky ugly yucky stuff. I repent of anything in my life including IN MY HEART like anger, hurt, bitterness, self-pity, complaining, etc. I receive God’s forgiveness and God’s comfort. I spend time with Him, lots of time with Him. I seek continually the filling of His Spirit. And I feed myself abundantly and daily with His Word, digging deep to learn about it and to live by it.

The Lord tests me through the stuff and people and relationships I want to quit, teaching me to live by His Word, strengthening me and perfecting His love in me, conforming me to Himself. And He allows the devil to attack me so I believe He can teach me more and more to place my trust in Him, to take refuge in Him, to be strong in Him, to submit to Him, to follow Him, to see He is my protector and defense.

Through it all, when I don’t quit, but persevere, when I endure, the Lord uses me to reach others with His love and messages from Him like this one.

Please don’t quit.

If it’s the Lord, and you’re sure of it, carry on, my friend, carry on. In His strength, for His glory, yielding yourself utterly to Him as He teaches you to walk in His ways.

In the verse above, look what David did when faced with an awful situation. He “encouraged himself in the Lord his God.” May we do the same!
