If you have ever struggled with anxiety as I have for years on and off, sometimes to exceedingly great degrees, other times modestly, other times somewhere in between, then you’re probably familiar with the overwhelming feeling that there is no choice. That anxiety is an ugly terrible heinous monster that simply overtakes us, that can’t be stopped, that can’t be defeated, that perhaps can be lessened with medication, that maybe can be controlled some with counseling, but that will always have its way with us and rule and reign in our hearts, minds, and every nook and cranny it seems of our lives. Ugh, right?
Imagine my surprise – and delight – early one morning when I decided not to let fear and anxiety take over my morning. No sooner than I felt the first sign of anxiety coming my way than I made a decision. I would not allow the thoughts threatening to take over my mind and drag me down hard and fast into a day of fear, worry, anxiety, and the yucky-ness of it all. What did I do?
I took the thoughts captive. Just like the Bible tells us to do. I stopped them. I refused them. I refused the anxiety. I refused the fear. I went the direction God wanted me to go instead. His. Now did I accomplish this in my own human weakness? No! I did it in God’s strength. He enabled me to have this little victory. Did it guarantee the rest of my day would be anxiety-free not to mention my life? No! The devil doesn’t give up easily to say the least, and the devil loves to attack and tempt people prone to anxiety and fear to start down the awful path of it all.
For some of us, anxiety and fear are a lifelong battle. But there is HOPE in CHRIST and in THE BIBLE when we submit to God and live in love for and obedience to Him. When we resist the devil and those awful anxiety-producing thoughts in the strength of the Lord Jesus Christ. And when we DRAW NEAR TO GOD and learn to trust in, rest in, hope in, put our confidence in, abide in, experience, and enjoy THE LORD AND HIS LOVE and VICTORY IN HIM! AMEN!
I encourage you to strive to focus on THE LORD, on HIS WORD, and on HIS LOVE! May any and all anxious thoughts be replaced with JESUS, HIS LOVE, & HIS PRECIOUS PROMISES!
“For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ, and being ready to punish all disobedience when your obedience is fulfilled.” 2 Corinthians 10:4-6
“Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded.” James 4:7-8
