Street Preacher Cries Out

“In those days John the Baptist came preaching in the wilderness of Judea, and saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand!” For this is he who was spoken of by the prophet Isaiah, saying:

“The voice of one crying in the wilderness:
‘Prepare the way of the Lord;
Make His paths straight.’ ”

Now John himself was clothed in camel’s hair, with a leather belt around his waist; and his food was locusts and wild honey. Then Jerusalem, all Judea, and all the region around the Jordan went out to him and were baptized by him in the Jordan, confessing their sins.

But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said to them, “Brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? Therefore bear fruits worthy of repentance, and do not think to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I say to you that God is able to raise up children to Abraham from these stones. And even now the ax is laid to the root of the trees. Therefore every tree which does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance, but He who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. His winnowing fan is in His hand, and He will thoroughly clean out His threshing floor, and gather His wheat into the barn; but He will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.”” Matthew 3:1-12

All I wanted to do was take a walk, but when you’re called to streets ministry as I am, going out onto the streets for anything at all – whether a walk, errands, a meeting with a friend, etc. – always presents an opportunity for the Spirit of God to move on one’s heart and lead him or her to something or someone that brings Him glory. Such as the day I walked straight out of the apartment, down one and a half streets, and within moments of crossing the street saw a man with a t-shirt about Jesus and repentance standing with a small group of people around him. I was so drawn by God to him and to them that I could not have gone anywhere else had I tried. I walked straight up to them as though I had been meant to be there and had in fact been invited and stayed for a while. Then off I went, but not before information was exchanged so I could join what turned out to be a bunch of street preachers again.

Not too long afterward, I joined them on the streets followed by a Bible study. Then, days later, I walked a few miles so I could join one of the street preachers at a well known New York City location on the streets. That was the night I heard a street preacher cry out – and cry out – and cry out! Oh, how he cried out! He couldn’t have held back his cries if he had tried. It was as though the Holy Spirit had taken control over him. As though God Himself was living inside the man and crying out to the people all around. And, oh, yes, how God’s Spirit lived inside him. So that he couldn’t stop crying out. But what did he cry? What by God did the street preacher cry out?

Just like John the Baptist so very many years ago, the street preacher was consumed with crying out to the people to repent, to confess they were sinners, to turn from their wickedness against God, their sinful ways, and to believe Jesus Christ died on the cross to pay their sin penalty, that Jesus Christ is Lord, and to devote their lives to Him once and for always. He cried out about the sins of humanity, he cried out that we all need a Savior, that Jesus Christ is the Savior of the world, that Jesus Christ is the only way to a forever relationship with God, and the only escape from eternal damnation in hell. Oh, how the street preacher cried out. Even as the world passed on by. Even as most people didn’t want to hear a word of what he cried out as they went about their business seeking and enjoying their worldly treasures and pleasures.

God almighty sent that street preacher to that place to preach Jesus Christ, just like God almighty sends me out day by day to preach Jesus Christ, and like God almighty sends out people far and wide to preach the only way to heaven is through Jesus, that every single one of us needs to turn from our sins and throw ourselves at the mercy of God and believe in Jesus as Lord with our lives truly committed to God and His ways for eternity.

Few people may have heard his cries that night, but perhaps you will hear them now.

Jesus Christ is Lord, and He is the only way to everlasting life.

Have you cried out to God for forgiveness, have you believed in Christ as Lord, have you given your life utterly to Him.?Oh, may you do so! Oh yes! Hear the cries. The cries for us all to repent from our sins and surrender our lives wholly and forever to Jesus who will reign forevermore. Oh, repent, repent, repent and turn to Christ as LORD!
