The Right Way to Love Others…
The Lord doesn’t ask us to love one another. He COMMANDS us to love one another. His two greatest commands are all about love. Loving Him with all our hearts first and foremost. Second, loving others as ourselves. Is this all He tells us about love? By no means! Throughout the Bible, He teaches us about His love for us, the love we are to have for Him and how it is to be expressed with humility, praise, honor, adoration, worship, service, obedience, and glorifying the Lord. And He tells us continually how exactly we are to love others and what in great detail that love looks like.
Fervent, sincere, and pure are three words that beautifully describe the love of others to which we are called as the Lord shows us in the verses below. We are to be fervent in our love for others! We are to be sincere in our love for others! We are to have pure hearts in our love for others!
Let’s look more closely at this. Fervency signifies great passion, devotion, zeal, and care! Sincerity signifies truth and genuineness not faking love nor simply going about the motions of loving people. A pure heart signifies that our thoughts and feelings are godly and not filled with underlying bitterness, jealousy, resentment, judgment, condemnation, hurt, vengeance, etc. even as outwardly we may be putting on an appearance of loving others. When the Holy Spirit shows us our thoughts are ungodly, we need to repent and purify our hearts whereby we get rid of all the wrong ones! That way, we can love and serve the Lord and others with pure hearts purely and passionately!
I am greatly convicted by the Holy Spirit even as I write this that I have a long way to go in loving others to the degree and in the way He desires. Oh, sure, I am growing in love. But I have my times of falling short whereby I need to repent. Most assuredly I need to climb up onto that potter’s wheel and place myself in the hands of the Lord as He by His Spirit through His Word continues to perfect His ways in me. As He continues to teach me how to love the way we are called to love.
Friend, we need to continually purify our hearts and lives and purge from ourselves all ungodliness right down to our very thoughts, words, and actions. And we need to strive in the strength of Christ for the glory of Christ to be real and passionate and pure in our love for the people the Lord places in our lives. Always remembering to love Jesus FIRST.
Please don’t be discouraged if you find you are falling short. Be encouraged as I am and take the challenge set before you to grow in love toward the Lord and in love toward others. Hallelujah, yes!
Oh my Lord, teach us to love! To love you first as so many of us struggle with loving others before loving you if we’re honest with ourselves. And so many of us struggle with loving ourselves instead of loving you first when you never command us to love ourselves at all. You command us to love YOU and to love OTHERS. Your love is so awesome that we don’t even need to love ourselves because we are so blessed and complete in your love for us! And then we are more blessed still in the love we receive from others. But this prayer, Father, is about our love for others. Help us to love you first, yes, and when it comes to loving others, help us to love them from a pure heart, passionately, and sincerely, yes, Father, yes, AMEN!
