The worst adultery of all? Yes, the worst adultery of all. If you have ever been betrayed by an unfaithful spouse, you know intimately the exceedingly indescribable pain of being the victim of infidelity. Truly there are no words, are there? And if you have ever committed adultery, or are even committing it now, against your spouse, you cannot even conceive of the devastation you are wreaking on the life of the one you professed to love and cherish for all the days of your life. But if you know the excruciating pain of adultery, no matter how horrific the situation you endured or may even be enduring now, you cannot even fathom how horrific – and potentially eternal – the ramifications of the worst adultery of all.
The adultery humanity commits against the Creator of the universe, God almighty in heaven, is the worst adultery of all. God makes it perfectly clear right from the start of the Bible that He created us to be in intimate fellowship with Him, and goes on throughout the Bible to tell us He designed us to love and worship Him, to adore and revere Him, to honor and respect Him, to commit the very lives He has given us to Him. When He commands us in the infamous 10 commandments not to commit adultery, little may we realize that adultery against a husband or wife is absolute sin in His eyes. Yet He does not stop with marriage between husband and wife when He warns against adultery. He makes Himself abundantly clear throughout the Bible that when we live our lives with our backs to Him, climbing into bed with our idols, keeping our hearts and eyes focused on our lovers, our pleasures, our lusts, our ears tuned to the world, our flesh clinging to whatever we believe may fulfill and satisfy us instead of Him, we are committing adultery against the Lord God almighty. When we love ourselves greater than God, and obey our flesh and the devil instead of Him, when we do what is wrong and remain in that wrong with no remorse whatever, we are adulterers and adulteresses who will pay an eternal price.
When Adam and Eve sinned in the Garden of Eden, their worst punishment was not losing their perfect lives in the beautiful Garden. It was their loss of relationship with God, for in their sin they could no longer be in His holy presence. When God sent His Sin Jesus to the cross, Jesus paid the penalty for our sins so we could repent and be forgiven, receive the promise of eternal life, and enter into intimate fellowship with God now and forever, committing our lives to living according to God’s ways. But when we reject what Christ did on the cross, or when we accept what Christ did on the cross nevertheless continue in our wickedness, with no sorrow, with no yielding to the Lord thereby allowing Him to transform our lives to be conformed to the image of Christ, we commit adultery against the Lord most high. The Old Testament is filled with the Lord issuing warnings against those committing adultery against God. Whore-mongers they were! And whore-mongers we are when we live our lives as though they are our own rather than His.
If you are committing adultery against the Lord God almighty, repent and throw yourself at the feet of Jesus crying out for mercy. Believe in Christ as Lord. Commit to live this day forward for God. Unlike the spouse who will not forgive the one who committed adultery, in God’s mercy, He will forgive us – if we return. Return, return, return. If you are committing adultery with the world and the devil, repent and return. While there is yet time.
The Lord speaks continually in the Old Testament of how His chosen people, the children of Israel, are committing adultery against Him no matter how good and gracious He has been to them, and He states clearly countless times that only a remnant of His people will ultimately be saved. The Lord will add to His chosen people Gentiles who repent and believe in the Lord Jesus Christ. What is the common denominator in those who will spend eternity with God in heaven and enjoy a relationship with Him even here, even now? Repentance, faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, a life committed to God. Is He speaking to your heart even now?
Hosea 2:7 And she shall follow after her lovers, but she shall not overtake them; and she shall seek them, but shall not find them: then shall she say, I will go and return to my first husband; for then was it better with me than now.
Eze 16:32 But as a wife that committeth adultery, which taketh strangers instead of her husband!
Eze 16:33 They give gifts to all whores: but thou givest thy gifts to all thy lovers, and hirest them, that they may come unto thee on every side for thy whoredom.
Eze 16:34 And the contrary is in thee from other women in thy whoredoms, whereas none followeth thee to commit whoredoms: and in that thou givest a reward, and no reward is given unto thee, therefore thou art contrary.
Eze 16:35 Wherefore, O harlot, hear the word of the LORD:
Eze 16:36 Thus saith the Lord GOD; Because thy filthiness was poured out, and thy nakedness discovered through thy whoredoms with thy lovers, and with all the idols of thy abominations, and by the blood of thy children, which thou didst give unto them;
Eze 16:37 Behold, therefore I will gather all thy lovers, with whom thou hast taken pleasure, and all them that thou hast loved, with all them that thou hast hated; I will even gather them round about against thee, and will discover thy nakedness unto them, that they may see all thy nakedness.
Eze 16:38 And I will judge thee, as women that break wedlock and shed blood are judged; and I will give thee blood in fury and jealousy.
Eze 16:39 And I will also give thee into their hand, and they shall throw down thine eminent place, and shall break down thy high places: they shall strip thee also of thy clothes, and shall take thy fair jewels, and leave thee naked and bare.
Eze 16:40 They shall also bring up a company against thee, and they shall stone thee with stones, and thrust thee through with their swords.
Eze 16:41 And they shall burn thine houses with fire, and execute judgments upon thee in the sight of many women: and I will cause thee to cease from playing the harlot, and thou also shalt give no hire any more.
Eze 16:42 So will I make my fury toward thee to rest, and my jealousy shall depart from thee, and I will be quiet, and will be no more angry.
Eze 16:43 Because thou hast not remembered the days of thy youth, but hast fretted me in all these things; behold, therefore I also will recompense thy way upon thine head, saith the Lord GOD: and thou shalt not commit this lewdness above all thine abominations.
