“Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God!” 1 John 3:1
Long ago I thought of killing myself by stepping in front of a New York City bus because I was so distraught and broken after seeing a man I had become involved with and purportedly fallen in love with walk down the street with his wife. Yes, you read that right. HIS WIFE. I had met him when they were separated and didn’t know back then that being involved with a married man even if he is separated is SIN AGAINST GOD. There I was contemplating suicide over the man I “loved” not returning the love I longed for. I ended up years later not only repenting but having the amazing opportunity to ask his then wife to forgive me which by God’s grace alone she did.
Know what I have since learned? That there is NO LOVE ON THIS EARTH BETWEEN HUMANS – even in the very best and godly of circumstances – that is as wonderful, as beautiful, as marvelous, as glorious, as fabulous, as satisfying, as lovely, as sweet, as life-giving, as life-changing, as exciting, as thrilling, as passionate, as intimate, as personal, as inspiring, as awesome, as amazing, as the love of God for His children.
This isn’t a one-time love we receive when we turn from our sins and believe in Christ as Lord. It’s an ongoing, rich, vibrant, growing, blossoming, phenomenal love we can receive from God and return to God and share with others WHEN WE INVEST IN THIS LOVE.
How so? By spending time with God daily, loving Him, praising and worshiping Him, singing to Him, seeking Him, praying to Him, reading the Bible, listening to His Spirit who lives inside His followers speaking to our hearts, enjoying Him, being grown by Him, etc.
No matter how extremely awful and sinful human love can be as I engaged in so many years ago, or no matter how wonderful human love can be as between a loving husband and wife who both love and follow Jesus, there is still no greater love than God’s for His children.
Please make absolutely certain day by day the Lord Jesus Christ is your number one love, that you treasure Him as your highest priority, and that you invest your time, love, and care – and your obedience – in Him and your relationship with Him!
