“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Phil. 4:13
“Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your labor is not in vain in the Lord.” 1 Cor. 15:58
“Hear my cry, O God;
Attend to my prayer.
From the end of the earth I will cry to You,
When my heart is overwhelmed;
Lead me to the rock that is higher than I.” Psalm 61:1-2
God knows my heart. So He knows sometimes I feel totally overwhelmed by how much He’s given me to do for Him. Not that I’m not exceedingly thankful and humbled He’s given me the calling and responsibilities He has. Just that sometimes I can’t seem to see over the mountain of it all.
So imagine one day my surprise when He told me this. Not the most comforting words, are they? Tough ones, don’t you think? Why would He do this? Shouldn’t He recognize how overwhelmed I sometimes feel and lessen my load, make my life more manageable, and take pity on me? Why this?
“Be absolutely unwavering in your resolve to get done what I give you,” the Spirit of God who lives inside His followers told me.
Hard words. A convicting message, isn’t it? But why?
The Lord Jesus Christ is God almighty. Forever Lord. Forever King. Sovereign. All powerful. All mighty. All knowing. Righteous. Holy. Master. Supreme. Preeminent. Creator of the universe. Does He not have the right to tell His followers what to do? Does He not have the right to be tough? Emphatic and clear? And is He not worthy of our love, reverence, honor, and obedience? Does He not deserve to be followed and glorified in all things? YES!
Friend, we live in a self-centered world in which laziness, sloppiness, excuses, quitting half-way through, not even getting started, switching pathways, choosing the easy path, picking the comfortable and easy over the hard and uncomfortable, choosing self over self-sacrifice, etc. is the way of the mainstream. The worldly way.
Sometimes we need God’s tough love. To go His way. Like I did that day. Perhaps it seems it would have been so very easy to feel overwhelmed and choose not to fulfill God’s will. To pick and choose what I wanted to do – and toss aside the rest. To go back to living for me – instead of living for Him. To tell God no thank you, I simply can’t and won’t do what you’ve given me to do. But He is Lord, I am His, I trust Him to give me the strength and all I need to do what He gives me to do for Him, and I love the Lord too much to say no.
Is that what you’re doing? Have you been waving God aside? Ignoring what He’s calling you to do? Have you quit somewhere along the way? Have you justified your decision to not follow through on what God’s given you? Have you just felt so overwhelmed you can’t even fathom moving forward following Him? Have you been wavering? Going back and forth between living for you and living for Jesus? Doing what you want, doing a bit of what He wants, then back to self again?
God was telling me that day to be STEADFAST. To be RESOLVED. To be UNWAVERING. To be RESOLUTE. To be FERVENT. To be PASSIONATE. To be TOTALLY COMMITTED. To be ENTIRELY DEVOTED.
To what? FOLLOWING HIM. No matter the sacrifice.
He is worthy of ALL our love, attention, devotion, honor, praise, worship, service, faithfulness, loyalty, commitment, dedication, glory, and ENDURANCE in doing ALL He’s given us to do.
But how can we? IN HIS STRENGTH. BY HIS GRACE. FOR THE GLORY OF GOD.
Don’t waver! Be resolute! Do what He’s given you! Through Christ! FOR HIM! AMEN!
It’s not about us, friend. It’s about Jesus! Let us live and breathe for the glory of God, hallelujah, glory to God, AMEN!
