“If anyone serves Me, let him follow Me; and where I am, there My servant will be also. If anyone serves Me, him My Father will honor.” John 12:26
I promise you that if you spent one day in my life on the road for Jesus for nearly two years now doing streets ministry and writing and publishing Gospel tracts, devotionals, and books with 5 special needs ministry service dogs accompanying me around the United States, you would probably understand why the idea of quitting comes to mind from time to time in one way or another.
Budget hotels can be a revolving door of chaos, drama, addictions, prostitution, drug deals, robberies yelling, arguing, domestic violence, sickness, ambulances, police cars, nastiness, downright cruelty – along with a portion of peace and quiet, calm and kindness.
Caring for 5 special needs dogs between the ages of 7 and 15 with issues varying from paralysis to anal gland infections requiring surgical procedures not to mention constant diaper changing, medicating, going in and outside for bathroom breaks, back and forth to the vet, well, you get the picture. Not always easy. Exhausting? Understatement.
Then there’s the financials. The fact the ministry has been growing and growing, and the more it grows, the more pronounced it is how very few people step forward with financial support even while the mega churches and the televangelists rake in zillions of dollars.
Oh, and the leading an international ministry with no staff and while being thankful for two beloved friends who do their best to keep up with preparing and shipping Gospel tracts and devotionals, dealing with the reality that the streets ministry and writing and publishing work which can be exhausting in and of itself gets compounded with all the other stuff like administrative, computer issues, calls to companies for help, decision making with one thing or another, etc.
Then there’s the exceeding solitude and the being so far away from loved ones coupled with the fact I face rejection, meanness, nastiness, and hatred on a pretty regular basis because of my exceeding love for and devotion to Jesus.
Why I am telling you this? To justify the permanent bags under my eyes, why my memory is sub-par thanks to exhaustion and not great sleep sometimes, why I buy used clothes rather than new ones to save money, why I don’t have the social life and entertainment life others do or get to take vacations like most people can? NO! I have a message for you in this.
NONE OF THIS – nor any other aspect of my life on the road for Jesus much of which I have not shared here – is the reason to quit humbly, faithfully, devotedly, and passionately pursuing God and His will for my life. NONE OF THIS is the reason to quit – not even one ounce of what He gives me to do! But this isn’t about me. This message is for ALL OF US – you included.
NONE of what we feel, see, hear, think, experience, undergo, face, smell, are challenged with, etc. is EVER a reason to quit doing what God clearly gives us to do for His name’s sake! Because this life, my friend, is not about us. It’s about HIM! And it’s about others! And He will give us ALL WE NEED to serve Him the way He desires!
We are called to LIVE BY FAITH – to WALK BY FAITH – not according to how we feel, what we see, according to our circumstances, etc.
Why don’t I quit? Why didn’t Paul the apostle and the other apostles quit? No matter how hard things got? BECAUSE JESUS’ LOVE FOR US AND OUR LOVE FOR HIM AND FOR OTHERS SHOULD BE MORE IMPORTANT THAN ANY PRICE OUR FLESH HAS TO PAY IN THE PROCESS OF LOVING AND SERVING JESUS!
And I’ll tell you something. There is NOTHING and NOBODY on this earth more important to me in the universe than THE LORD JESUS CHRIST – and than joyfully and thankfully being privileged to be in His forever presence and than serving Him for eternity!
Don’t quit serving Jesus, friend. He’ll give you the strength to carry on! Friend, carry on!
Am I calling it quits? ABSOLUTELY NOT! I’m pressing on in the love, strength, mercy, power, truth, peace, joy, and hope of the Lord Jesus Christ for the glory of God almighty, AMEN! Please do the same! Hallelujah, yes, AMEN! Carry on, soldier in Christ, CARRY ON!
