Falling Out of Love

“Therefore be imitators of God as dear children. And walk in love, as Christ also has loved us and given Himself for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling aroma.” Ephesians 5:1-2

God’s greatest commands are to love Him with all our hearts and to love others as ourselves, and He will give His followers through His Spirit who lives inside His followers every ounce of love we need day by day to obey His commands but –

But what? God calls us to WALK IN LOVE. He calls us to LIVE IN LOVE. But when we allow our hearts, words, thoughts, and actions to get clogged up with sin, we block His love from flowing in and through us.

In essence, we fall OUT OF LOVE instead of WALKING IN LOVE. We get caught up in our flesh instead of walking led by His Spirit. We find ourselves caught up in self instead of caught up in Christ.

Examples? Anger. Vengeance. Bitterness. Pride. Doubt. Worry. Unbelief. Fear. Jealousy. Meanness. Cruelty. Selfishness. Rage. Gossip. Clogging our hearts. And our lives? And the endless sinful actions that come from all the sinful thoughts we allow in our minds.

Bottom line? Walking in love for Christ and for others begins with being filled with Jesus. With His love, mercy, grace, compassion, etc. With His Spirit. And we need to be absolutely vigilant about getting rid of anything in our hearts and lives that is not borne of His love. That is not pleasing in His eyes. That is not honoring to God.

We need to recognize when God’s Spirit is showing us we’ve allowed ourselves to get clogged up with sin and immediately repent from it and turn back to God. And be filled afresh with His Spirit. So we walk in His love.

When we find ourselves falling out of love and falling into sin, we need to turn away from our sin and fall back into Christ’s love.

Where does it all begin? Let us fall in love with the Lord. And be filled again and again – continually, yes – with His love so we become a conduit of Jesus’ love to pour out onto the world all around!
