Long ago, well before the Lord called me to start a ministry, when I was just beginning to learn about loving and serving the Lord and others, I was excited to have the opportunity to pay for a one-night motel stay for a homeless man. The next night, the man wanted another night! What would I do? I went to my beloved pastor who had a great deal of experience ministering to those in extreme need. His advice was simple.
I came over time to see God’s followers are to love, to give, to sacrifice, to be generous, to help, to serve, etc., but we cannot do this with every single person. Not to mention some people are not needy but greedy as I also learned from my pastor. There are also some with greater needs and some with lesser ones and some we’re called to help and others whom others are called to help. God blesses and provides for us so we are cared for and so we can be used by Him to bless and provide for others. So how do we know where, when, how much, to whom, in what way to give and to serve?
“Use wisdom,” my pastor had said.
We need to seek the Lord, pray to the Lord, read the Bible, wait on the Lord, hear the Lord, obey the Lord. We can seek counsel from others who follow Jesus if we need help discerning the Lord’s will. Always, always, always, we are to give as the Lord leads us according to His will.
I didn’t pay for another night at the hotel for the homeless man. But rest assured the Lord has blessed and humbled me with countless opportunities over the years to extend the Gospel message, hope, encouragement, help, His love, grace, mercy, and provision to a world in need in all sorts of ways, with all sorts of people, in all sorts of places, all for HIS GLORY.
Lord, please help my readers and I to give according to your will in your time for your glory. Please help us not to be deceived and taken advantage of. Please help us not to give when, where, and to whom you don’t want us to give so we are fully available and able to give when, where, and to whom you desire we give. And may we be humble in this, may we not take the praise and glory, may we give it where it wholly belongs. To you! Dear Father, thank you, AMEN!
“Give, and it will be given to you: good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over will be put into your bosom. For with the same measure that you use, it will be measured back to you.”” Luke 6:38
