And as he entered into a certain village, there met him ten men that were lepers, which stood afar off:
And they lifted up their voices, and said, Jesus, Master, have mercy on us.
And when he saw them, he said unto them, Go shew yourselves unto the priests. And it came to pass, that, as they went, they were cleansed.
And one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, and with a loud voice glorified God,
And fell down on his face at his feet, giving him thanks: and he was a Samaritan.
And Jesus answering said, Were there not ten cleansed? but where are the nine?
There are not found that returned to give glory to God, save this stranger.
And he said unto him, Arise, go thy way: thy faith hath made thee whole.
(Luke 17: 12-19 KJV)
Maybe you’ve heard the Bible story about Jesus and the 10 lepers, but you may have missed a few things that I just realized in my study this morning.
I had heard preachers point out that only one of the 10 lepers cleansed by Jesus turned back to thank Him and was therefore made whole (healed). But if you read the verses carefully, you will see he was ALREADY healed (made whole) BEFORE he turned back. So what’s the big deal? He is the only one who SAW (or recognized) that he had been healed. And, as I have heard preachers point out, he is the only one who came back to thank God for his healing.
But there is something else I had missed until this morning. The one leper who returned to thank God was NOT quiet about it. Just like the 10 lepers who RAISED THEIR VOICES to ask Jesus to heal them, this one leper who turned back to thank God RAISED HIS VOICE. He thanked God LOUDLY. What does this mean? First, he was obviously enormously thankful. After all, he came all the way back to say thank you. Second, he thanked God LOUD ENOUGH for others to hear!
Let me ask you a few questions.
1. When God blesses you, do you go on your merry way like the nine lepers, or do you turn around to THANK GOD?
2. If, and when, you thank God, do you thank Him LOUDLY so others can hear about the GLORY OF THE LORD?!
What an incredible opportunity we have to witness to the world of Jesus Christ by LOUDLY declaring what the Lord has done in our lives!
