After three years of turning on a blinking fluorescent light in my dog building, I was utterly shocked to see how BRIGHT the room is now thanks to a friend installing a brand new light. I had grown accustomed to a dim room with a blinking light. I didn’t even realize how dim it was because I was so used to it. And I stopped noticing the blinking light long ago. It had become all too familiar.
I have other lights in my home that are dim because I figured my electric bill would be lower with two bulbs in a light instead of three, or because I was too lazy to add another. A few years back, I couldn’t understand why my bathroom light had grown so dim until a friend told me my light switch had a dimmer I had accidentally hit. The familiar became my norm.
My life before Christ was much the same. I was so used to living in darkness that I could not see what I was missing. It’s impossible to see in the dark, isn’t it? Even when light invaded my darkness at times, I would get a glimpse and turn away. When at last I became a committed follower of Jesus, my life became an altogether different story. I was so used to living in the pitch black darkness, and then in the dim, that I had to adjust to a whole new way of light – and of life.
Today, though I have work to do on my at-home lighting, I make sure I am living my life in the bright light. I do this by bringing my sin before the Lord for forgiveness and cleansing, and I do this by staying in close touch with a circle of sisters in Christ who love me, pray for me, encourage me, and hold up God’s Word to me as a shining bright light.
With the brand new light in my dog building, I have a much easier time seeing what needs to be cleaned up. With the bright light of Christ shining in my life and my daily feast of God’s Word, I am able to see when something in my heart and life needs to be cleaned up. Because never do I want to enter back into darkness now that I know what it’s like to live in the bright light of Christ.
