The Lord reminded me that if I am not following His call with the motive of glorifying His name, I need to purify my heart. The Lord commands us in His Word to “purify our hearts” AND to “cleanse our hands”. The right actions with the wrong heart, or the wrong actions with the right heart, are insufficient. The Lord wants me, and you, to do the right actions with the right motive. For His glory.
Lord, I know I am not alone in this. First, Lord, please forgive me for the impurities you showed me in my heart. I repent of them. Please help me to purify my heart and to cleanse my hands that I may be holy as you are Holy, as you call me to be. Thank you for your mercy! Now, Lord, I ask that you use this devotional to convict hearts of impure motives.
I ask that you bring others to repentance through this writing, helping them to see in their own lives where they need to check their motives and purify their hearts and cleanse their hands. Father, I ask that you purify our lives by the washing of your Word. Give us a hunger, a passion, to study and to apply your Word to our lives by the power of your Holy Spirit – for your glory! In Jesus’ name, AMEN!
“Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. 8Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, yedouble minded.” James 4:7-8 KJV underlining added for effect
“But the LORD said to Samuel, “Do not look at his appearance or at the height of his stature, because I have rejected him; for God sees not as man sees, for man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.” 1 Samuel 16:7 NASB
“As obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorance: 15But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; 16Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.” 1 Peter 12: 14-16 KJV
