Doing Something BIG for God
” His mother saith unto the servants, Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it. And there were set there six waterpots of stone, after the manner of the purifying of the Jews, containing two or three firkins apiece. Jesus saith unto them, Fill the waterpots with water. And they filled them up to the brim. And he saith unto them, Draw out now, and bear unto the governor of the feast. And they bare it. When the ruler of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine…” John 2:5-9
Want to do something BIG for God? Then stop thinking BIG. Think obedience instead. Our culture is so engrossed in thinking BIG is best, that many of us convince ourselves we need to serve God with BIG acts in BIG ways, or else what we do for God doesn’t matter. You’ve probably heard how Jesus turned water to wine. Do you realize the servants who OBEYED Jesus did nothing more than fill the waterpots with water and draw out what turned out to be wine to serve the people? In their seemingly ridiculously insignificant act of obedience, Jesus performed a miracle that is still talked about thousands of years later!
What did Jesus’ mother tell the servants? She told them to OBEY. What did the servants do? They OBEYED. They didn’t argue, debate, laugh, disagree, resist, procrastinate, or rebel. The servants did what servants do. They served. They OBEYED. God doesn’t need us to do something BIG for Him. He needs us to humbly and willingly OBEY so He can do something BIG through us.
Countless times in my own life, when I have obeyed the Lord’s instructions to do something seemingly totally trivial or absurd but nevertheless what was the will of the Lord, I have seen Him work through me in phenomenal ways. I believe many of us are missing incredible opportunities to serve the Lord because we want to do something BIG for God and can’t see that the key is not the size of what we do for Him, but the fact we are willing to love, serve, and obey Him.
Have you been missing opportunities to serve God because you have been looking for something BIG to do? Instead of looking for something BIG, humbly pray for His will and OBEY so He can do something BIG through you.
