One night I prayed my heart out for a friend on and on and on over the telephone as she was in unfathomably excruciating pain from a life-threatening illness. It was late, I was tired, but to me there was nothing more important than the Lord Himself than to love her right then and there as I cried out to the Lord for her and with her.
This same friend and I had both at various times decided to part ways for different reasons, but the Lord in His love, mercy, grace, and sovereignty had helped us both to deny self and what we felt and wanted for ourselves and to submit to Him and His will and choose to not walk away from our each other and our friendship and to love one another instead. I distinctly remembering Him instructing me to stay in her life.
When we obeyed Him, and placed the friendship in His hands, and chose to love Him and to love one another instead of loving ourselves and walking away from each other to satisfy our flesh, He strengthened our friendship and made our friendship beautiful in a godly way. The friendship now belonged to Him as it should have all along.
Now there we were that night as the Lord knew all along we would be despite our challenges along the way, two daughters and servants of His, crying out to Him together for mercy for my beloved friend. There we were loving Him, trusting Him, and loving one another as the Lord God almighty commands us to do.
If you urgently yearn to walk away from someone or some people, please seek the Lord first and don’t walk away unless you know it is His will. Look to the Lord, read the Bible to make sure what you believe you hear from Him lines up with it, seek counsel from Christ followers strongly grounded in the Bible if and as He leads you, and obey Him when you hear Him. If He instructs you to walk away, whether permanently or for a season, walk away. If He instructs you to stay, obey and seek and trust Him to give you the strength. Humble yourself before God almighty and follow His Spirit as He leads you forth!
Love the Lord with all your heart, love others as yourself, as He commands us, forgive when you need to forgive, and seek His forgiveness and the forgiveness of others when you need it. Above all else, live wholeheartedly, utterly, totally sold out – FOR THE LORD! AMEN!
Father, forgive us for not loving others as we should. For loving ourselves instead of loving you and others as you command. Help us to lay down our lives for others as you call us to do. Give us wisdom and direction and strength in all our relationships and help us to humbly walk forward in your love. AMEN!
