Father, I Don’t Understand

“Father, I don’t understand,” I told the Lord regarding something He had made clear He wanted me to do.

“You don’t need to, do you?” He replied. “You simply need to obey.”

In our pride, sometimes we want the Lord to explain Himself before we decide whether or not to obey Him. Or even if we plan to obey Him, we still want an explanation first. As though He owes it to us to explain Himself. As though our obedience should be contingent on getting the answers we want. Or on agreeing with whatever the Lord’s reasons, plans, and purpose are.

There is nothing wrong with seeking the Lord for understanding, and He may choose if it is His will to give us understanding. But He has absolutely every right as God almighty to not give us an ounce of understanding, reason, explanation, etc. Either way, we need to respond to the Lord’s will with a humble, willing, and obedient heart with accompanying action. Choosing to do what He tells us to do with or without understanding.

The Lord may give us understanding about His will for us when He first instructs us to do something. He may choose to tell us after our act of obedience in retrospect why He chose a certain way, plan, etc. Or He may choose to never reveal to us why He called us to do something.

Regardless, He is Lord. We are to believe in Him, trust in Him, love Him, obey Him, and follow Him. We are to walk in the path of righteousness He lays before us. With or without understanding, and even when it doesn’t make sense to us, we are to obey the Lord!

Let us obey the Lord, friend, oh, let us obey. For He is Lord! Forevermore, AMEN!

Father God in heaven, almighty God, Lord of Lords, King of Kings, help us to obey you without any debate, resistance, or rebellion. And even without understanding if you choose not to give us understanding or if we simply can’t see what you are revealing to us in the way of understanding. Help us to be submissive toward you, Father, and to yield ourselves utterly in obedience to you, AMEN!

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart,
And lean not on your own understanding;
In all your ways acknowledge Him,
And He shall direct your paths.” Proverbs 3:5-6

“…He leads me in the paths of righteousness
For His name’s sake.” Psalm 23:3
