Feeling Distracted?

Loving and serving the Lord with all our hearts comes with challenges what with the devil desperately trying to wreck our relationships with the Lord, to dampen and even quench our love for Him, and to wreak havoc on our service to Him. Time and again, in my own journey following Jesus and in hearing numerous Jesus followers share with me their own experiences, I have found the devil absolutely loves to attack our love for and service to God through distractions.

If the devil can distract us from God, and from loving Him, and from the Bible, and from obeying Him, and from serving God according to His will for our lives, then he can make headway in his mission to steal, kill, and destroy (John 10:10).

But lest you think all distractions are unholy, ungodly, and unrighteous because they are outright sinful, think again. Some distractions are actually “good” in their very nature but “bad” in that we can be tempted to get off track with God and following Him.

Examples? Helping people in need. Serving at church. Going on a missions trip. Going to a prayer meeting. Talking on the phone with someone who is hurting. Handing out Gospel tracts on the streets of New York City. But how can they be distractions? If we are doing any of these things, or any other “good” and “godly” things, that do not line up with God’s will for us at least at that time, we are distracted from loving and serving Him the way He desires at that time. Our focus is then not on God and His will for us, and our energy and resources are being used for something other than God’s will.

In very recent years, for likely a variety of reasons, I have developed exceeding difficulty in staying focused and in not getting distracted. So I have to be immeasurably careful with staying on track and to work hard to continually seek and follow the Lord and receive His correction when I stray off course.

Please be careful regarding distractions whether they be dangerous ungodly ones or whether they be “godly” and “good” ones. Let us work hard to seek and fulfill the will of God each and every day, AMEN!

“My heart is fixed, O God, my heart is fixed: I will sing and give praise.” Psalms 57:7 KJV

Oh, Lord, please help me and every single reader with this! This world is so filled with distractions, and it seems harder and harder for so many of us to not get distracted. I remember long ago you told me, “Just because there are distractions doesn’t mean you have to get distracted.” In plain English, God, I believe you were telling me that just because we’re tempted to do something we shouldn’t – like to get distracted – doesn’t mean we have to say YES to the temptation. Oh, God, give us the strength to stay on track. And for those of us who have significant issues with focus as I have come to have, we need you all the more. Oh, God, help us all! Forgive us all! Help us to keep our focus on you and your will for us, oh Lord! Amen!

“Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.” Isaiah 26:3 KJV

“Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.” 1 Corinthians 15:58 KJV
