I have been prone to feeling sorry for myself my whole life, and for a very long time I excused my self-pity by convincing myself I deserved to have it due to having a lot of challenges throughout my life. But I now know the truth about self-pity which I now share with you.
Self-pity is sin against God and needs to be gotten rid of. God’s greatest commands are to love HIM with all our hearts and to love EACH OTHER. He doesn’t command us to love and pity self. He commands us to love Him and others!
“Jesus answered him, “The first of all the commandments is: ‘HEAR, O ISRAEL, THE LORD OUR GOD, THE LORD IS ONE. AND YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, WITH ALL YOUR MIND, AND WITH ALL YOUR STRENGTH.’ This is the first commandment. And the second, like it, is this: ‘YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.”” Mark 12:29-31 NKJV
We are to DENY self, take up our crosses, and follow HIM.
“Then He said to them all, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me.” Luke 9:23 NKJV
We are to live for JESUS not for self.
“and He died for all, that those who live should live no longer for themselves, but for Him who died for them and rose again.” 2 Corinthians 5:15 NKJV
We are not to be consumed with ourselves. We are to be focused on God and on loving and serving Him and others.
“Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth.” Colossians 3:2 NKJV
“Make a joyful shout to the LORD, all you lands! Serve the LORD with gladness; Come before His presence with singing.” Psalms 100:1-2 NKJV
“For you, brethren, have been called to liberty; only do not use liberty as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another.” Galatians 5:13 NKJV
We are not to be negative, complain, whine, and be miserable and feel sorry for ourselves over what we lack or have not gotten or have lost or over our circumstances and anything in this world or for any reason whatsoever. We are to be thankful for and to enjoy God and His blessings.
“in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” 1 Thessalonians 5:18 NKJV
Now, when I feel sorry for myself, the Holy Spirit of God shows me my sin and mercifully and lovingly leads me to repentance. I thank God for His patience with me as He teaches me to live according to His ways and forgives me when I fall short.
“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” 1 John 1:9 NKJV
Got self-pity? Repent and turn to God!
