Your Calling, Not Theirs
Ever felt down, discouraged, disappointed, frustrated, downhearted, and maybe even depressed because you feel like you’re not measuring up to how somebody else or some other people are serving God? Because of how they are called by Him to serve Him? Because your serving God doesn’t look like their serving God? Because you don’t have great passion and drive for serving God in the same ways they’re serving God? Because you feel like a flop and failure in serving God when you think about how they’re serving God? When you compare yourself to them and to their calling?
Friend, we weren’t created in other people’s image to look like them and to do what they do and to serve God the ways He calls them to serve Him. We were created in God’s image to grow in His image and to do what He calls US to do and to serve Him the way He desires. We were formed to love and worship Him forever and to fulfill the calling He gives US not the calling He gives them.
Please take your heart and eyes off how others are serving Jesus. Quit comparing yourself to them concerning the calling God has given them. Seek and fulfill God’s will for YOUR life including how He calls YOU to serve Him. Love and serve Him with all YOUR heart according to His will for YOU and not according to His will for others.
Jesus’ followers are all part of one whole Body of Christ, and we each have OUR calling whereby we all form His body with Jesus as our beloved Lord, Savior, master, God, Father, and head of His Body of Christ! Let us each do OUR own part in serving Him!
God chooses OUR calling in His Body based on what pleases Him! How then must we please the Lord when we fulfill His calling for US not His calling for others!
“But now hath God set the members every one of them in the body, as it hath pleased him.” 1 Cor. 12:18
God tells us in His Word to serve Him with gladness! Let us rejoice that God gives each of us an individual calling, and let us strive with passionate, joyful hearts to fulfill His personal calling for US. For the glory of the Lord Jesus Christ, AMEN!
“Serve the LORD with gladness: come before his presence with singing.” (Psalms 100:2)
“For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit. For the body is not one member, but many. If the foot shall say, Because I am not the hand, I am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body? And if the ear shall say, Because I am not the eye, I am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body? If the whole body were an eye, where were the hearing? If the whole were hearing, where were the smelling? But now hath God set the members every one of them in the body, as it hath pleased him. And if they were all one member, where were the body? But now are they many members, yet but one body. And the eye cannot say unto the hand, I have no need of thee: nor again the head to the feet, I have no need of you. Nay, much more those members of the body, which seem to be more feeble, are necessary: And those members of the body, which we think to be less honourable, upon these we bestow more abundant honour; and our uncomely parts have more abundant comeliness. For our comely parts have no need: but God hath tempered the body together, having given more abundant honour to that part which lacked: That there should be no schism in the body; but that the members should have the same care one for another. And whether one member suffer, all the members suffer with it; or one member be honoured, all the members rejoice with it. Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular.” (1Co 12:13-27)
YOUR Relationship, Not Theirs
I had been reading a few books by famous women in ministry when I found myself feeling disappointed about my alone time with Jesus. In my estimate, I wasn’t measuring up to what I had determined was the quality and the beauty of these women’s alone time with Him.
They called their time with Him devotional time. I didn’t even call my time alone in God’s presence reading the Bible and seeking and hearing Him devotional time. My relationship with the Lord didn’t look like theirs, so wasn’t there something terribly wrong with me and my relationship with Jesus? My goodness, how short I fell when I compared myself to them!
I was definitely encouraged, inspired, challenged to grow, and blessed reading what they had to say about spending time in God’s presence and about their overall relationships with Him. But I was doing something dangerous and I believe displeasing to God. I was comparing my relationship and time alone with God to theirs and judging and condemning myself as a result. How would I ever measure up? I would not! But the reality is I wasn’t supposed to! The same is true for you, friend!
Our relationships with God and the time we spend alone with Him praising Him, worshiping Him, praying to Him, singing to Him, seeking Him, hearing Him, and reading the Bible shouldn’t be measured against and judged in relation to what others do in their relationships with the Lord.
Our relationships with the Lord should be based on the Lord, the Bible, His Spirit who lives inside His followers, His desires, His will, His plans and purpose for us uniquely and individually, how His Spirit leads, guides, empowers, and enables us, His love for us, and our love, dedication, obedience, and devotion to Him!
Please don’t base YOUR personal relationship with the Lord on Christians. Base it on Christ. Most assuredly, if the Lord so leads you, be inspired and encouraged and challenged by other people’s relationships with the Lord to grow in your own. But YOUR relationship with Jesus is not to be founded on others. It is to be founded on God almighty Himself!
Let us love and worship and serve the Lord with all our hearts. Within our own, personal, individual, unique relationships with the Lord. Let our relationships with Him be beautiful in His sight! Oh, hallelujah!
“Give unto the LORD the glory due unto his name; worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness.” Psalms 29:2
“O worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness: fear before him, all the earth.” Psalms 96:9
God’s Timing, NOT Yours
The Holy Spirit said to me one day these words:
“Timing is important. Way more important than you realize. It is fundamental to following me. You can do my will and miss my timing. You can have my timing and miss my will. You need to fulfill my will according to my timing. I have a plan and purpose for everything, and with it comes my time frame. Because I see the whole picture. You see little pieces of it, yes, as you were told long ago by someone in your life at the time. Don’t miss my will. Don’t miss my time frame. Obey me in both. And you will see come to pass my desire. This pleases me. When you obey me in all things.”
Friend, we were created to love, serve, and worship the Lord with all our hearts forever. We enter into a forever relationship with Him when we turn from our sins, believe in Jesus Christ as Lord who died to pay our sin punishment and was raised from the dead, and genuinely devote our lives to God and His ways.
We are to no longer live for self according to OUR self-centered ways, OUR will, and OUR timing. We are to live for Jesus according to HIS ways, HIS will – and HIS timing.
Seek the Lord concerning His will – and His timing. Obey the Lord concerning His will – according to His timing. The two go hand in hand. God’s will. God’s timing. For God’s glory, Amen!
