Imitating Jesus

Believers in the Lord Jesus Christ are to imitate the Lord! As His dear children! Including when it comes to LOVE!

“Therefore be imitators [followers in KJV version]of God as dear children. And walk in love, as Christ also has loved us and given Himself for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling aroma.” Eph. 5:1-2

The KJV version translates the Greek word meaning “imitators” into “followers”. We who believe in the Lord Jesus Christ are to follow the Lord Jesus Christ! We are to imitate the Lord Jesus Christ! Notice the very next thing mentioned is LOVE. Specifically, WALKING IN LOVE. Not just any old love, mind you. We are to LOVE as Jesus LOVES us!

What do these verses say about the love of Jesus? HE GAVE HIMSELF FOR US! HE OFFERED HIMSELF FOR US! HE SACRIFICED HIMSELF FOR US!

Now the Bible is filled from start to finish with God’s love and all the different manifestations and characteristics and aspects and expressions of it including His creating us, providing for us, sending His only Son Jesus to the cross for us, Jesus dying on the cross to pay our sin penalty and being raised from the dead, God giving an everlasting relationship with Him to those who turn from ours sins and believe in Jesus and in His death and resurrection and truly devote our lives to Him, His salvation and fellowship, His mercy, grace, lovingkindness, friendship, forgiveness, longsuffering, compassion, comfort, instructions, heaven, healing, redemption, the beauty of nature, others to love and be loved by, His peace, His joy, His hope, His promises, and on and on His love and loving blessedness and blessings go!

Friend, I want to encourage you to open your heart and eyes and ears to the love of Jesus each and every day as He shows it to us in the Bible and as He expresses it to us in our everyday lives. But please don’t stop there! Humble yourself and love like He does!

How can you and I possibly love like Jesus loves? His Holy Spirit who lives in His followers pours into us the love of Jesus! So we have the love of Jesus with which to love! When we are yielded to the Spirit of Christ in us, we should be overflowing with His love! We can and should most assuredly experience and enjoy His love for us, but above all else we are to love HIM with all our hearts and OTHERS as ourselves!

“Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us.” Romans 5:5

Here is an example of what God’s love looks like:

“Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up; does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil; does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth; bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never fails…” 1 Corinthians 13:4-8

We are incapable in our human flesh apart from Jesus of loving the way He calls us to love! But as we learn daily to deny self, take up our crosses, and follow Him (Luke 9:23), we yield ourselves to the Spirit of Jesus living in and through us! Thereby can we love as Jesus loves. Because it is His love being poured through us! Oh, may we love! May we love! May we love as Jesus loves, oh hallelujah, all glory to the Lord for this, AMEN!

“I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.” Galatians 2:20
